Today's 5k course is uphill with a challenging turn in Central Park.
fyi - there is no such thing as a "certified 5k XC course"

Sorry but Ben True’s run 13:12 the last 8 years in a row. He’s running NYC on Sunday against Bekele and couldn’t be bothered with this glorified tempo in racing clothes.
And I mean 13:53... That Cali HS team has 4 guys running 14:2Xs on a certified 5k XC course.
That's the spirit! Someone running a marathon tomorrow doesn't care about a 5k championship? Consider me shocked! And a championship 5k being won in 13:53?? I'm so disappointed! That's almost as bad as the 2015 world championships on the TRACK being won in 13:50! That entire field could've been beaten by high schoolers!

Well, I guess Joan Hunter proves again that she can coach, not that I ever had any doubts, and Drew Hunter proves that he is a talent who only needs health to be nationally competitive at this distance. I like the fact that he prevailed in the kick of a close race over a thirteen flat guy with a kick even more than just winning the race. Paul Chelimo's Olympic medal and U.S. championship in the Trials are all he needed to do to prove himself again this year. He'll be his same old self when it counts next year and every year until he's old. Glad to see Centro running longer stuff in the fall. Running xc was always a key portion of his off-seasons when he was at his best.
What world are you living in? Joan probably is a good coach, I have no idea but this race shows nothing. Not an impressive race at all. He beat a washed up Centro and a bunch of nobodies

He beat all the people who showed up for a national championship race, which counts for a national championship.
Any 5k race that doesn't include the BTC army isn't a true national championship. Congrats to Drew, I am happy for him. He took some impressive scalps today, but lets not blow this out of proportion.
The 5k national championship this year was at the Olympic trials. Other than Paul Chelimo, NONE of the top 12 guys from the trials ran this race today. Drew is a fantastic runner. I think a little bit of consistency in his training would propel him to that top echelon of US 5k runners. I am also fully aware that if Centro and Chelimo from July were running, there would have been a very different outcome.

Agreed. Drew would not even be in the top 20 in the NCAA for cross country this year.

That doesn’t make it impressive.
13:53 isnt that like a D3 track meet "under the lights" kinda time?
Aren't the serious runners splitting 13:45/13:45 for 10km?

Well the meet director needs to shorten and redesign the course making it faster, or run it in the opposite direction.
Fans want fast road races. Most of us here could tempo a 13:53 in our trainers while making a YouTube video. We want pro sub 13 5000m on the roads when our top high schoolers are knocking on sub 14 XC courses. Sub 28 wins D1 XC.
PS- Whats with 2nd place Centro? He hasn’t been winning much. He needs AlSal or Matt Sr getting in his face.

My point was that his reasoning that places near the water this time of year are warmer than in the spring didn’t make sense. To prove my point, I sarcastically asked him to explain lake-effect snow to elucidate that if his statement were true, there’d be no such thing as lake-effect snow. Dick.
You did not understand what he said. He said places near water are warmer than places far from water in fall. And in spring is reversed. He is correct. He didn’t say that the place is warmer in fall than during the spiting. This is because there is a lag in temperature change between water and air. Air cools faster and heats up faster than water.
I’m having a little trouble keeping up with who said what and what they meant, BUT, in an effort to put this to rest, someone said it was 41 degrees at the race. I live 15 minutes away and my phone said 30. Assuming my phone is correct, and recounting being near the water this time of year and usually freezing my ass off, I didn’t see how it was warmer on Manhattan. Now, I missed the person also say there was no wind. That’s on me. I can understand it being warmer without the wind, based on what all the apparent meteorologists on here have said. I also think that since the city traps in air — take a walk in the city and don’t tell me you don’t feel like you’re smoking a cigarette — better explains the 11 degree difference in temperature.
Excuse, I don’t think it “better explains” why, but I think that the city traps in air is more of a factor.
Not a expert, but doesn't his form look a bit off? Can't exactly put my finger on it, but something about the way he runs doesn't feel right.
