Ran my first 100-mile trail race after being a road runner for a long time. Needless to say, I'm not doing it again.
Why?
- Nutrition and hydration is too important. In a marathon you can just consume some gels and water and you're good to go. Half-marathon or shorter distances you can get by without anything. Not so in 50+ mile races. I know a guy who trained 8 months for a 100 mile race run only to DNF at mile 87 with cramps and violent diarrhea. My stomach was highly unstable miles 70-90.
- Gear (trail shoes, hydration vests, extra clothing and layers, headlamps, various creams and sauces, etc.) A lot of success in an ultramarathon comes with gear tinkering and optimizing, not actual running. I wish I had chosen different shoes, they worked in my 25 mile long runs, but I could've used more support after mile 50.
- Crewing. WTF?? Run the damn race on your own. Some guys had fully stocked vans with cots and people ready to massage them.
- Anything beyond 50 miles takes too damn long. I ran for 23 hours. It was... long.
- Too much training, most of which is long slow running, if you want to do well.
- Recovery is a beast. I still feel awful a week later. This never happened with road marathons. And I'm dealing with stuff I never had to before (eg juicy foot blisters).
- The suffering. In a 100 miler, you're training will only take you so far. The rest is all about who can suffer the most. The last 30 miles fonking sucked.
- Having to deal and interact with hardcore ultrarunners. The crowd was... interesting.
What are your thoughts on ultramarathons (50+ miles).
