Max HR: 188 (measured w/ chest strap after mile or 400m PB when too exhausted to do anything but slouch in place with arms on waist)
400m, mile, 5K, 10K training PBs: 80”, 7’44”, 8’50”, 10’.
Age in forties, running experience nearly a year (near zero running when younger though generally fit), BMI 18.5.
Problem: Typical HR when jogging easy is at least 166 and often 180+.
Based on advice here and elsewhere, I’ve been run-walking 30+ mpw for the last 5 weeks to keep my HR rangebound, like 134-154 or 140-160, never higher than 160. My run-walks end up being 50-70% running depending on how fast I run in the run portions. Typical average run-walk pace is around 11’+, sometimes 10’40”, sometimes like 12’.
Yesterday evening, it was cold and rainy and I figured it had been a while and I was itching for a continuous run, not just a run-walk, and ran a nearly 4-mile course near my place. I ran easy, easy enough that when my dad happened to call, I continued running while talking to him, just so I could tell myself I was running “conversational pace”, though I’m never sure if I’m conversational enough with all the panting in between.
My last mile average HR was pretty steady at 176 and was at 184 at the very end (in part coz there is a slight up ramp near my place) measured using a chest strap, but I still felt conversational. My last mile pace was 10’20” and my average pace was probably closer to 10’, but I only have the last mile numbers because I stupidly forgot to start my watch until then.
I’m frustrated that I’m so uneconomical. I’d like to be able to run easier like how it feels in the 150s, not like how it feels in the 170s.
I’m also confused how I can feel at 184 like I did (just fine) with a max of 188. When running say a 400 or 800 hard, 184 feels very very different. My max is not lab measured, but how off can the chest strap really be? The measurement is also consistent with another previous chest strap as well as multiple optical HR watches. The highest I’ve ever seen is 190 on my Apple Watch.
What other than run-walking many many miles can I try? I don’t have an easy continuous running pace. Even if I ran at 13’ (in terrible form), my HR climbs to 165, so run-walking is actually more satisfying and faster (around 11’ average). But it does not seem to be helping me run easy continuously, not yet at least.
