It makes sense. He has as much speed as Gebreselassie, with a faster 800 than Geb and slightly slower 1500, but only 2 minutes slower over 26.2 miles. 2 minutes spread out over 26.2 miles is only 4.5 seconds a mile slower (not much.) Therefore I ask the question, why could he have not run a 12:50 5k or perhaps a 26:50 10k, both being slightly conservative. He posseses the footspeed and endurance, something doesn't add up. Fill me in.
It's all mental my friend. No one had run close to 12:50 at that point. It was 'unrealistic' at the time.
Geb ran 3:31 indoors, that's worth just over 3:27 outdoors. Also, Geb claims (and many of us are inclined to agree) that he's as much as two minutes faster than his PB. Lastly, did he run 13:17 and 28:11 in fast, rabbited races under perfect conditions? I doubt it.
There was no EPO in the 1970s ...
How often did Dixon race the 5k? I don't think it really was one of his top priorities for very long.

2. 3:31 indoors is NOT worth 3:27 outdoors. Whoever came up with that, no.
Umm... Geb's 3000 is 15 seconds faster than Dixon's.
So not even close as you move up the distances.
Dixon was a miler who ran a good marathon.

Back to topic, it's a different energy system. That high-end, aerobic power system is where non-African runners seem to be the furtherest behind.
Non-Africans have run 1:41 and 3:28.9; they have also run sub 2:06:30. But for every non-African who has broken 13, there are 12 times as many African runners who have done the same thing.

Yes, he did run 1:46 at an Ethiopian team time trial at the track in Addis in 1996.
Neither Kostre nor Hermans has ever reported that Geb ran 1:46.

There is just no comparison. Geb went 3:31 indoors and 2:06:20 on his second attempt, give Geb a couple of more tries and he'll be under 2:06.

Typical of Letsrun, repeating a fallacy over and over until you actually believe it. I've asked Hermans myself, he says "no".
using my calculator , a runner who can do a 3:33.89 1500m and a 2:08:59 marathon should be able to go 13:00 for 5000m. The problem with that calculation is when Dixon ran the marathon, there's no way he was in 3:33 shape for 1500 that same day. If you want an accurate estimate, you'd need his 1500m from when he was in marathon shape, or his marathon ability from when he was in 1500m shape.
