Hi, all!
I'm a 24 year-old male runner shooting to run a 2:29 marathon on 14 November. My training block started on 19 July at 75 mpw and went like this: 2 weeks at 80 - 85 mpw; 8 weeks at 90-95 mpw, 1 week at 100 mpw; a week mostly off for injury; and present week, which is shaping up to be around 91 mpw.
Back in mid-to-late August and early September, I was feeling like Superman; I was crushing workouts like 13+ miles at marathon pace and 10 x 1K @ 3:07, and I felt so solid that I rarely ran slower than 6:35 pace, even on "easy" days. I felt like my fitness was rocketing up to where I needed it to run sub-2:30.
Then, toward the end of September, I felt like I had gotten hit by a truck, a trend which has continued to the present day. Everything started to feel hard; my perception of easy pace slowed by over 20 seconds per mile, I struggle to run workout paces that I was hitting with ease mere months ago, and I've been dealing with a constant series of niggles and aches and pains that won't seem to go away. Notably, my heart rate for a given pace has increased by 10-20 beats per minute, and my resting heart rate has increased by 15%. Basically, I feel fundamentally broken, and it has ruined my confidence for my race.
My first thought was iron deficiency anemia, since I have struggled with that condition for years. However, my serum ferritin was tested on September 27th at 290 ng/mL, even though my iron levels and iron saturation had decreased slightly since my previous test in June. Quick question here, is it possible to pop a falsely high ferritin level? On the afternoon that I was tested, I had run 10 miles AM + 5 miles PM and had had 2 x 65mg ferrous sulfate tabs earlier that morning.
My only other thought is overtraining as a result of under-recovering and under-fueling. Due to my job, I usually get about 6.5-7.25 hours of sleep per night, with little of it deep. With regards to food intake, for most of the training cycle - even when I was feeling great - I was eating 2,200 - 2,550 calories per day at 5'6, 130 lbs. I've since increased that to about 2,800 cals, but haven't noticed a difference in my energy levels.
At the end of the day, what the heck do you think is wrong with me? In that same vein, is there any chance of me salvaging my marathon with almost exactly a month to go? Thanks a lot, and run safe!
