This is almost embarrassing to ask, but is it possible for anyone to break 2:30 or even 2:40 in the marathon with the right training? In college (D3), I ran 4:27 for the mile, 9:10 for the 3k, 16:49 for the 5k, and 34:58 for the 10k. I graduated two years ago and since have run 4 marathons all in the 2:44 to 2:48 range. I know I don’t have fast PRs, but I guess what I’m asking is are some people just that untalented that they can’t break 2:40? My original goal was to chase a sub 2:30 time (I know that was pushing it based off my PRs), but I have been running nearly 100 miles a week in every buildup with workouts and long runs (up to 24 miles) and everything. I’m wondering if I need to adjust my goals and just accept the fact that I’m slower and that the 100 mpw are a waste of time for someone of my ability. All the other guys on my college team seem to run low 2:30s (or even sometimes mid 2:20s for a few) rather easily after graduation. Also, I’m not saying that my times are awful. I’m just saying with the amount of work I have been putting in I was expecting a little more out of myself and was rather frustrated after Boston.
