What happened?
Rosario and the other guys are cool but Fauble is kind of obnoxious.
Elite is a term loosely thrown around in the running world.
If you parent will foot your living expenses as an adult then every runner is elite
Looking at their workouts it was obvious Fauble wasn't what he has been in the past. Smith has been kind of out of it for a while, I was surprised when he ran 2:09 in Arizona, it seemed like a miracle, and today is more what would be expected. And Rory just tries to hammer and seems to not understand you can't do that for 26 miles. In their 16 mile marathon effort workout video he was talking about how it got hard at 13 miles but you've got to just keep pushing through it. That's not good if it's really hard at 13 miles when you're supposed to be doing marathon pace.

Now that's kind of a dumb post. Elite means you're one of the best. At what point is someone not elite at what they do? It's only about money? Fauble and Smith are both ranked around 200th in the world in marathon running. If they were 200th in the world at golf they'd be millionaires, and such a small portion of the world every tries to golf. Is a millionaire golfer not elite because they're only 200th? And NAZ actually has good funding, one of the few groups that actually gets good money. Fauble is getting tens of thousands of dollars from the team, and probably made $20k or more from Boston just to run the race. Some people you've probably never heard of are getting thousands of dollars.
Bummed for those guys. Another subpar outting.
Ben Rosario seems like a really nice guy, I've heard great things about him. But DANG something is going on in Flagstaff. I don't get what is up with these social media guys, you would think that they can gauge their fitness, if you know that a training cycle has been sub par, why would you generate so much hype for yourself before the race?
Fauble talked about winning the race in the pre-race interview. What the heck? If I knew I was in less than amazing shape I wouldn't dare utter the "W word".
I think Fauble is done. I think he had the race of his life in 2019 Boston, and I think he used that performance to extrapolate his future progression into a world beater, but that hasn't panned out. I think when he struggled at the Oly Trials that mentally broke him.
Fauble is an amazing runner but from the videos of workouts he seemed a bit...unhappy? I wish the whole team all the best.
Rename the group to NAZ mediocre at best?
Not a perfect analogy. For that analogy to make sense, they would need to be around 200th in the marathon, half marathon, 10k, 5k, and road mile. Because those golfers are 200th their sport, not just a single event.
Anyway, I agree with your basic point, that somebody running sub 2:10 is probably a reasonable definition of elite.

Just to offer a better analogy:
It is like being the 200th best 3rd baseman in the world. The 200th best 3rd baseman isn't going to make an MLB major league team. So they can try to go to another country to make their major league team, or they can play in the minors here.
Either way, they're looking at a living wage, maybe about what an average non-stem college grad makes straight out of college, in the 50k range. It is "pro." Elite can be reasonably argued is a term that applies, but some people might hear "elite" and think it means a higher level, along the lines of contending for wins at major meets.
Rupp sitting at the start line at the trials mentally broke him.

That made my day 🤣
Galen Rupp is a legend. That is one of the best running photos of all time

Seriously I couldn't agree more with you on that one. He has shown again that he is still America's number one marathoner—by far.

Months of hype? Maybe I don't pay enough attention to social media.
I wouldn't say it was arrogance or ignorance. I'd say it was the marathon. They document what they do. Scott wants to do really well. It didn't happen but what did you expect?
They had the 3rd and 4th American. Not great runs by Fauble or Smith but not terrible.
You're not going to have an "A" day in the marathon every time out.
Kohnen also bombed today. She was much better before she came to Flagstaff, while working. That's damning. Rosario has gotten the recipe wrong a couple times in a row now.

Was she racing in Hokas before her move to NAZ? I wonder how Fauble would race in the vaporfly.

Um, nope.
