can i ask what is so tough about these conditions? yes it was hot, I get that. Rupp still managed to run fast. 74 is warm but that isn't blazing, and it was a lot cooler at the start.
Guys like reed Fischer were being bullish about 2:10. I don't think you go from 2:10 to 2:14 cause its a little warm out, but I also might just be a massive d!ck with my analysis here.
Reed Fischer might have a chance at 2:10 if he leaves Tinmom subelite
It doesn't matter who he (Salazar) had in mind, that's his mind not Rupp's.
As almost all predicted, Jordan missed it. 2:31:54.

Fisher and Derrick has to say that so they keep getting sponsored. Those guys just don't matter at this level.

Rojo goes home DEVASTATED! Rupp gets second. I was thinking third was the best he would do. That was a good run.
I don’t get the long standing hate for Rupp. You have endless busts from Kenya. Shelburrito gets properly busted. Yet Rupp is the bad guy. It is weird mental gymnastics.
Hate is a strong word. I was cheering for Rupp here, but:
- banned drug cheat coach
- "testosterone medication"
- "likely doping" according to ABP
- highly likely using a forbidden method
- suspicious testo spike according to ABP
So much smoke!
Yeah, but you aren’t defending Shelburrito and other Kenyans like Rojo.
I think Rupp on epo would be a high 2:02 to low 2:03 marathoner.

LOL Rupp saying Illinois is B10 country and taking the opportunity to sh:t on Ohio State for losing to Oregon.
I love Rupp. Even though I live in Ohio I'm not a huge OSU fan either. That said he should have kept his mouth shut. Time and place and all those things...

Like I respect him amazingly but him winning is like too much for my brain to handle with the Salazar stuff.
I'm glad he was excited to do so well. He was very emotional.
He and Pinkowski must be close. He just kissed race director Carey Pinkowski!!! I've always wondered why h e comes to Chicago and not NY every year. That may play a role.
Along with being an easy course, Chicago's an easier and more comfortable big city to visit and stay in before a marathon than NYC. That could be a factor too.
That's a factor for hobbyjoggers maybe.
reed is a good guy. Easily my favorite tinmom athlete. I was really hoping that he would have a good one.
I hope that the crew in Boston tomorrow has a good day. I am a little bit sick of all this social media hype and youtube "documentary" series boiling down to 2:15 performances.
This is kinda an ugly rant, but I HATE the way that a lot of American running is going, I HATE the social medial hype machine and I HATE these running lifestyle vlogs that emphasize smoke and mirrors over real content. We need more Bill rogers, more Brian Sells, more guys working hard in anonymity until they are darn sure that they are ready to run an incredible marathon. We need less guys moving to boulder and flagstaff to sleep in till 10am every day, after which they drive 45 minutes to get to the perfect trail for their 60 minute easy run, then they go to a pricy brunch to eat hipster burritos and coffee all while predicting sub 2;10 at X marathon
Shalane's time?
Chris Derrick's time?
i can respect all the talent rupp has and the work he puts in, but i just don't really find his career that compelling. too much coddling and science experiment gray area stuff for me to actively cheer for him. props to him for grinding an incredible race today after a short break and bad conditions though. probably the most respect i've had for him in a race. was not a fan of the sit-and-kick track performances. and yes, i know he's not the only one to do that. i just prefer a bekele-style, whip it out and dare anybody to challenge you style of racing.
They don't have it mentally. They waste it all calling each othe bro this and that and making stupid hand signs for the video. All little children's game. They will just pick low hung fruits and be done in a couple of years.
Crazy stat: Emma Bates had the fastest split of the top 10 in the race for *every single split* past half including into the windy section:
Half-25K: 13:13 (fastest split by 5 seconds)
25K-30K: 17:00 (fastest split by 21 seconds)
30K-35K: 16:59 (fastest split by 53 seconds)
35K-40K: 17:08 (fastest split by 1:05)
40K-Finish: 7:33 (fastest split by 2 seconds)

Dude just look them up.
Shalane's time
1:23:19 half
2:46:39 finish
Chris Derrick
1:06:51 half
2:18:02 finish
Time to give up the dream and get a real job with that Stanford degree or ultras.
You're Welcome!
Thank you.

Very solid 2:15* marathon debut for 3:57 miler Jacob Thompson.
Rupp's 2:06* is only a half minute off his PR, surely a conditions-converted PR. He only needs to show up in this same shape for a time trial setup to get the AR.
TME's Reed Fisher in 2:14* .. meh .. still not living up to his 1:01 half.
* tougher conditions
That asterisk after his name isn’t due to weather conditions.
It’s due to history.
Looks like the Alphafly is dead for elites wearing Nike -- nothing but Next% as far as the sys can see. We'll see if Nike's Spring release of the Vaporfly II changes that -- I don't know what the changes will be.
