Kibiwott Kandie 26:51 before NYC

I for one am curious as to what Bekele would've squeaked out before his #2 all time mark.

Mutai ran 27:19 in the 2011 BAA 10k. Came 2+ months after his 2:03. So he didn't run it before the build but not too long after. Clearly he was fit for something fast even if he didn't have that tailwind. He ended up running 2:05-flat in NYC that November. Then there was all sorts of pressure from the Kenyan Olympic federation to run a fast time so he went out way too fast at Boston in 2012 in the heat, was a DNF, and then left off the team. Ran 2:04-flat in Berlin on pure hate. One good marathon after that. Would have loved to see 2011-2013 Mutai against Kipchoge/Bekele with super shoes on.

Anyways, 26:51 is FAST. Really looking forward to this debut.

Good post. Mutai in 2011 was unreal. His course records remain untouched a DECADE later. IIRC only one person came within a minute of his NYC time.

My only concern for Kandie is he is a Tadesse type and is lights out at 10K, XC and the Half but has trouble with fueling and whatnot in the Marathon. Otherwise, this guy is a monster prospect in the Marathon. Better than Kamworor in my estimation given all of Geoffrey K's injuries. In his HMs, you see how ridiculously strong he is even doing a lot of work and pushing the pace with surges and such.

Mutai's 2:05 in NYC is a top-three marathon performance of all-time in my book. Dennis and Kipchoge have the others, and to me it's questionable who is better.

The marathon is a completely different beast, c.f. Tadese. Only time will tell. Not expecting much from a debutante.

Most impressive marathons, I would have in no particular order:

Eliud Kipchoge (Vienna) 1:59:41

Geoffrey Mutai (NYC) 2:05:06

Eliud Kipchoge (London) 2:03:05 (understand he might've had a little bit of good foam in these, but not done in super-shoes, and a stacked field aside from a very in-form Biwott wasn't close)

Dennis Kimetto 2:02:57 (Berlin). Pre-Super shoes and taking down a scorching form Emmanuel Mutai by 16 seconds

Geb ran 26:51 on the track in 2008 about 4 months before running 2:03:59.

Salazar ran a 27:30 a few days before a 2:08.52 or something at Boston.

All Kandie needs is for some magic training . ))

Yeah I think it was a Saturday in the 10000m against a seemingly overweight Henry Rono and then 9 days later was Boston.

10k speed means nothing with the hills at NYC

Seth Demoor will smoke kandie with the vert training and old man strength

That was the race where Kimetto followed him through the line looking comfortable and emotionless; he probably could have won, but the two were training partners and only Mutai stood to win the WMM-Series grand prize by winning.
