Hello there.
I am currently training for my upcoming Cross Country season which will start in two weeks. Lately I've been doing a weekly hill rep workout usually 12/18 rep or 30 seconds effort @miles pace. I do most of my hill training on a 250 m climb which is super steep at the beginning (around 15/25% grade over 100 m). Then the hill get more mild. The second part or the segment does not exceed 7%.
I prefer to run on the second part of the hill. I think running on moderate Hill is more specific for XC / road running. However I noticed that when I am running on steep hill my calves and ankle seem to work harder. I've also seen video of sprinter training on super steep hill, they said that steep hill is good to maintain a good running form.
So I was wondering, what are the main difference on muscles when running on steep hill vs moderate climb ? For a long distance runner, is it good to throw some interval on steep gradient, or is it better to stay on more gentle hill ?
