Sania Sorokin, one of the best road ultrarunners in the world (world champion in 24 hours, fastest non-Kouros Spartathlon ever, 100 miles world record in 11:14 hours) is running a 24 hour race for the first time in 2 years. He is in a way better shape than back then and 13 hours in he is on pace to run a bit over 301 km (187 miles) (calculated using an 11:15 hours split, which is what top runs historically split around in a good day).
To give you some perspective, no one in history has ever run more than 286 km (178 miles) but Kouros, who has 10 (!!!) results above that line, including the world record of 303,5 km (188,6 miles). This is widely considered the strongest ultramarathon record there is and no one has ever been close to that. (more info in the Lets Run article here:
)
And while we have 11 hours and a million things that can go wrong, it is still remarkable that this is the first close-to-record pace run that goes past the halfway mark since the record was set back in 1997. Will Aleksandr blow up big time and DNF or we will see a controlled slow down and the fastest non-Kouros run in history or it will be a day to remember? Follow along here:
