"It was a running joke for most of the 2021 season: America’s best 400-meter runners don’t even run the 400."
I grew up watching Michael Johnson and Marie Jose-Perec killing the 400 in 1996. Haven't followed Track & Field very well over the years and recently am getting back into it. Back then it seemed that 400 hurdlers were people who weren't quite fast enough for the flat 400, but now it seems that the best hurdlers could potentially win the flat race but choose not to run it.
And Shaunae Miller Uibo said she wanted to only do the 200, a weaker event for her, even after the Bahraini doper was banned. Thankfully she ended up running it and winning easily.
Athing Mu chose the 800 as her main event when she seems to have plenty of speed for the 400. Yeah, I know that worked out fine for her and I'm glad she did the 800, but it is interesting.
Fred Kerley switches to 100/200... also worked out for him in the end as he happened to run the 100 of his life in the final, but he easily could have missed the US team in both events whereas he was pretty much a lock for a medal in the 400.
Does the flat 400 not pay as well (in terms of sponsorships) as the other events? Or why else does everyone avoid it like the plague?
