I’m a male in my mid-30s with about ten years of hobby jogging experience. I’ve been thinking about setting some new goals and have chanced on the idea of trying to break five in the mile.
What I don’t know is how unreasonable this might be. FWIW, I have a fair amount of free time and am willing to put in the work.
Here’s some general background:
These day, I mostly do about 20-30 miles of mostly easy running per week.
Several years back, on about 30-35 miles per week, my PRs were roughly 1:31 in the half and about 19:00 in the 5k. (Yes, slow.) Under that training regime, with mostly easy stuff and some tempos mixed in, I ran about 5:40 for the mile once on a track. I also occasionally did mile repeat seasons back then at about 6:00 min/mile.
Bottom line: I’m slow and getting older. Could I still make this happen, or is it a hopeless Peter Pan fantasy?
