I was just about to say Flojo, as I had seen her run when she still looked like a woman. In '88 it was a shock to see her transformation. Drugs do work. But was it worth it? She died young like other dopers like Ben Plucknett. No physical evidence yet but I'm confident that eventually they'll prove a link between doping and shortened lifespan.

The funny part is, if the Germans go forward with trying to expunge Marita Koch's 47.6 (as the article off the front page claims they may actually try to do), then if the IAAF is forced to remove Koch's times then Kratochilova would become the 400 record holder with her 47.9 . . . best clean 400 female is probably Perec.

The Chinese swimmers win the the big prize for most obvious dopers, followed by East German throwers.

I remember seeing an article in SI a few years ago about East German Women Shotput throwers. They turned into males and had full facial hair.

Before I even saw that first picture, I was gonna answer "Jarmila" to the original question. But in terms of a transformation right before the eyes of track fans, it's probably Flojo. But the East German and Russians of the '70s and '80s were grotesque, so...take your pick among them. Maybe Barbel Wockel, the one Koch was complaining got more steroids than she did.
