… and failed to win. Kip Keino 1968, Peter Rono 1988, Noah Ngeny 2000 and Asbel Kiprop 2008 were all unexpected against heavily favoured rivals.

How do we rid ourselves of this hoodoo?
You don't.
I am a big fan of Kenyan athletes but there are other good athletes in the world, doping or not.
Today was Jakob's turn but it could have been Kerr's or Wightman's (or Tim's).
Those four athletes, and maybe even McSweyn, would have been right to think they could have gotten gold in a good race.
And the more Kenyans turn to the roads, the more you will see other nations dominating on the track.
I think Jakob proved today that he is decidedly the best 1500m runner in the world. Nearly matched Tim’s PB in the Olympic final. If not for his illness Jakob would have beaten Tim at Monaco too based on how well he’s run this year when healthy.
Tim’s reign is over. Jakob’s reign has begun, but we’ll see how long it lasts with all the young talent behind him.

Probable. I have a feeling the marathon will be a disaster.

Kenyan officials reportedly said that their runners had forgotten their magic orange juice at home.
It's not easy to say if Tim would have won today with a better tactic, but it's definitely very possible. Gave away half a second in the start, then did all the job for 1000m (400-1400). Allowing someone like Jakob to draft off him was his demise.
This is way different than Kiprop’s poor races.
Cheruiyot ran well.
My one hope is that after Noah Ngeny upset El G at the Olympic final, he never beat him again. Same thing with Centrowitz and Kiprop. Even Makhloufi only ever beat Asbel twice: the London final and Rio final. I hope Tim calls it a season to heal his hamstring and come back blazing next year.
Don't run anymore DLs this year, Tim.

They're something like 12-1. Jakob wins one race then suddenly he's the GOAT. Tim loses one race and it's a decline. I saw you guys call Centro the "master" and the "best" after Rio. But it takes consistency to be it.

I'm hoping we go to Paris as underdogs, then we'll win.
Having 3 legit guys will help and is likely if Tim is at his best at Kenyan trials in the future. The race became weird with the shock of Tim getting easily passed at Trials. Of the first 3 Simotwo in reality was the tactically weakest, quite ironically. Sandbagging in crowded fields isn’t the right move.

No one thought Centro was the world’s best 1500m runner after 2016, he just happened to have the race play out the only way he could win, and he ran the race he needed to with smart tactics. Jakob was getting progressively closer to Tim and besides the comeback race after his injury has been pretty much untouchable over 1500-5k this year and is likely to only keep improving over the next couple years. It’s very different than Centro/Kiprop. Tim would have beaten Jakob most likely had Tokyo been held last year, but Jakob has been on a trajectory for his age that we’ve never seen before. El G is the GOAT up to this point but that could change over the next few years.
By injury I meant illness*
It's laughable and a joke that after Jakob beat Timothy only once he's proclaimed the 🐐
Let me ask again those who are all over with Jakob, how many times did he beat timothy?
Timothy had a hamstring. You could even see how he was racing in the heats. And for Jakob whom you think will be dominant, let him chill. Kenya we usually churn out new champions everyday. He may have beaten Tim but not every other Kenyan 1500m runner. We have other runners who are coming up! He better prepare himself very well ..

Tim only made the Kenyan team on a technicality after finishing fourth at the trials. He obviously hasn't been running at his best year due to his hamstring issues. And Jakob wasn't coming off an injury in Monaco, it was a sore throat.
