It does seem like the pandemic hit Lyles pretty hard mentally. Just the uncertainty of the whole thing. I disagree though that abandoning his other interest would help. If anything his art and Dragon Ball Z would have more important during a rough time. I do agree though he just didn’t seem like the 2018/2019 free spirit.

Tied his seasons best in the Olympic final. Yeah, a little off this season but it's not like he didn't deliver tonight. Two guys were better. Got out well, ran a great curve, just couldn't hold on.
I don't get why the attitude this cycle seems to be gold or bust. He ran well & got an Olympic medal.
Some countries appreciate their athletes getting to the Olympics
Some countries appreciate their athletes getting any medal
USA only gold is good enough. Get gold or go home.
Lets Run Armchair twats who can't even run 17.00 in the 100M throwing shade at these Olympians.
Are you a follower of U.S. sprints poster? Some posters have let me know on this site: Let'srun is for 5000m/10000m/Marathon fans. U.S. fans of 5000m, 10000m & Marathon must be satisfied with Olympic gold every 50 or so years. U.S. is a nation of 100m to 800m athletes plus jumpers, sprinters and throwers. More specifically, U.S. is the premier nation of the word going back to 19th Century for 110mH/200m/400m/400mH athletes (or Imperial Measured Events). It is not the sole responsibility of a 24 year old lad to carry the tradition, but do not expect U.S. sprint fans to react to bronze medal as do U.S. 5000m/10000m/Marathon fans. Do you think Kenyans are happy with results of 3000mSC? I am certain Kenyans are not saying: At least we got a bronze.
1. out of shape. In the Trials, he was too bulked up. He looked lethargic. Lacked the pop he had in his legs in 2018-2019.
2. He went woke. He is competing against the best of the best with a target on his back from 2019. He simply has no time to get involved with patently ridiculous politics. It is not 1968. He was talking about about the protests he planned at the Olympics.
3. His mind was that of a narcissisic standing champion, not of the hungry, humble and determined challenger (like he was from 2017-2019). His brain locked ease in the final 5m of the semi-final almost cost him a place in the final. Challengers are never so foolish.
All that said, physically he looked much better than at the Trials.
He needs to rededicate himself to his craft and quit with the delusions of grandeur and monetization. If he does so, he can be in the running for the Gold in Paris. If he does not and he lets victimhood become his theme, he might very well be done.
P.S. Disclaimer: I thought Lyles in 2018-2019 was incredible save for the immaturity and clowning.
He choked.
Clayton Murphy choked
Emma Coburn choked
Bromell choked
US has had their amazing performances (frerichs, sydney, Delilah, athing, bednarek, nilsen, etc.) but have surely underperformed.
Forgive if was posted earlier in this thread...story from his local paper (Washington Post). Seems like he had a rough 2020:

Yeah, he underperformed, but he actually got a medal unlike those 3.

Just hasn't been himself this year.
For the final, he actually got out great.
He then faded at the end of the 200. Was that pressure getting to him?
He needs to take a step back and focus on running instead of the social media "pressure" these young stars are falling victim too.
I wanna know what kind of meds he went on two years ago. He posted something about mental health. No idea it’s related, though… any pharmacologists out there that know if psychological drugs affect physical performance?
He's mentally ill and stupid. The fact that he can run pretty fast for 200 meters doesn't deserve deep analysis.
De Grasse was running into -0.5 headwind. What does that convert to with (eg) 0.0 or +2.0?
Lyles used up too much energy show-boating and clowning around in the tunnel and before his race. Dude needs to focus up and quit trying to pretend he's Bolt. Bolt backed it up, so it's all fun when he won. Lyles just looks like an immature clown kid.

Yes, and his PR is 19.5, considerably faster than anyone else in the field. He ran well and won bronze from Lane 3. He's a great sprinter. But he would've won gold from a better lane.
if your "talent" is dependent on your lane, you're not actually that great.
Degrasse beat him on the straightaway, not the turn. If your argument is that the "tight" turn from lane 3 left him so depleted that he couldn't hold on in the last 50 meters in a 20-second race, well, he's just not as good as you thought he was.
He does have the same coach as SMU and both have been off this year.
Clearly SMU got it together for the 400m even if her 200m was a bit off.
