There should have been a rain delay and Injury to Sandi Morris

There was a rain delay for pole vault and discus, at least for a while. I feel really bad for Sandy Morris. She's had some bad luck with her poles getting lost by the airlines a couple times and now this... but it's not like the rain is what caused her pole to snap?!?

They wear spikes for the track events. Doubt there is much chance they'd slip on the track.

Yes agreed, her pole broke very low after it had already been fully loaded and was starting to straighten out again. Poles do not usually break a couple of feet above the tip like that. I have to believe it was damaged in transport or it was a manufacturers defect.

I had a vaulter break a brand new UCS pole like Morris uses (probably same length too) in almost the exact same spot on the first jump the pole was used. I’m starting to think this might be a common defect in UCS poles.

I will also add coaching high school I’ve seen high jumpers, long jumpers and pole vaulters all slip and fall at the takeoff on wet runways. Even with spikes on it’s terribly dangerous and it makes me upset when the powers that be at any level think it’s OK to proceed without these events in these kind of conditions. In the pole vault it’s a double whammy because the pole gets wet too and your hand grip can slip, no matter how much sticky crap you try to put on your hands. You can see in the video Sandi trying to keep her pole dry with a towel in the pouring rain, it’s an almost hopeless situation. If you think the “twisties” in gymnastic are bad think about trying to vault 15 feet in the air off a slippery wet runway with a slippery wet pole in your hand and then try doing it again after having the pole break on you and almost drop you on your head in a metal box. Almost no one is coming back from this mentally even if they are physically OK.

I dont recall there ever being a ban on competing in NCAA and AAU. Could you provide proof?

Gerry Lindgren told thNCAA and AAU to f-off? He might have but I'm not aware of it, nor why?

And here are the details :In 1965, the NCAA pulled a boycott of the AAU championships when I was a freshman in college. I wasn’t eligible to run as a varsity runner because back then freshman couldn’t compete in the NCAA ... but they could still run in the AAU races. I didn’t even know there was a war or a boycott, until I was coming back on an airplane and two guys from a newspaper asked me if I was running in the upcoming AAU meet and I said ‘Yeah, of course.’ I got home and the headlines in the newspaper were that ‘Lindgren defies NCAA ban.’ And I thought, ‘What ban?’ I had no idea what was going on.”

RT: Still, history says you stood up to the NCAA. How did it get resolved?

GT: “My coach called me and told me I was just a puppy dog for the AAU and that I was doing what they wanted me to do and I was going to lose my right to go to college if I didn’t stop this.

I was threatened the same way.....These people don't care about us as athletes.... and this most recent NCAA decision to let you market your likeness and image...F--ing Riudiculous.... I'll be selling my T shirts and signing autographs at the Boston College vs Clemson football game this Fall..... Both Clemson and Boston College have decided not to fund scholarships for male track athletes.... So what do we owe the AAU and NCAA? ...... Nothing...

There are television schedules that need to be adhered to. That takes precedence over athlete safety in dangerous rainy conditions.

It seemed they were very slow in the rain delay. I saw 2 women who had the discs slip out of their hands and at least one who slipped on the circle. Pole vaulting needs a good grip and rain interferes with that.

I would also say delay the hurdles. Too much risk of someone getting hurt. (I would not say that for a "flat" event.)
