Thanks for posting; it’s a good article. Did anyone else notice that the winning time of the December 5,000 between Hocker and Centro was listed as 15:32?
Yup, they can’t even proof read or edit a track article correctly. I can’t believe SI or Chavez didn’t catch that, but shows how out of touch they are. It’s the first thing any nuanced distance track fan noticed about article.
Hocker didn't run the distance medley at the ncaas as well.
That 7x200m workout after getting his ass kicked by Nuguse and Teare is legendary.
Ran a 23 second 200 on pure hate to close out that 7x200 you talk about elite raw speed and that is it.
Chavez is garbage
The article posted says 1332

? Article lists the time as 13:32: "Hocker’s rivalry with Centrowitz grew from unsuspecting roots at a meet last December in California. In a low-key 5,000 meter race, Centrowitz outleaned Hocker at the finish line in 13:32.92 for the win by .03. The next generation of Ducks were literally on the heels of the current stars."
That’s because they changed it
Fun read. Both Hocker and Centro’s chances are pretty slim though with Cheruiyot, Ingebrigsten, the lately hot Katir in the running, and given that the top three Kenyan as well as Ethiopian qualifiers all ran their trials under 3:34.
From the article:
They focused on short interval work and the coaches believed the body would adapt to unaccustomed stresses as long as it wasn’t too much. They just kept seeing how quick they could get him at different paces. He adapted to that really well.”
At Cathedral High School, his coach Jim Nohl applied the same training philosophy but fine-tuned with a more statistical approach since he was also the school’s math teacher.
So Nohl was also having Hocker perform short interval work, but "with a more statistical approach"? What exactly is meant by "with a more statistical approach"?
They left out the fact that Hocker is an anti-vaxx wingnut.
'Slim chances', notwithstanding, I think as long as Hocker, himself, believes his own chances are as good as the next contestant's, he'll run an honest race, keeping himself in position to strike.
Hocker's kick is beast right?
But if he's in a 3:30-low final... no shot he can drop a 12.x 100m at the end of that. He will get burned.

Pure ability can you take you far, maybe even a medal, but often poor decisions come back to bite you at the worst time.
