I would say the physiological advantage gained by winning you’re heat outweighs the negative of putting in the fraction of an effort more it took her to go from second to first

49 second 400m woman frontrunning > "tactically sound" 53 second 400m woman, given similar 800m prs
That's why Mu isn't a lock for the gold even though she is the fastest woman at the Olympics. She doesn't have experience with how to run a fast race in traffic.
frontrunning = no traffic

Psychological* auto correct
It is fairly apparent that many here are hoping for a flop from Mu and if it does happen they gleefully crucify her character into the ground. I venture to say they are hoping the same for Rodgers and Wilson.
Clearly the OP never ran track. The field knows she’s the best in the race and she typically goes out hard. Nobody is going to pass her. Then she took them through in a 63 second first lap. That’s literally a doddle considering they’ll probably go out in 56 or maybe faster in the final. Her heart rate probably never got about 75bpm. Plus, go look at prior world champs and Olympic Games in the 800. The best in the 800 always front run the heats to avoid being tripped up or boxed in. An 800 goes by very, VERY fast and the worst thing you can do is get in a trotting first lap race and be boxed in on the rail because everyone in the field can run 63 while sleeping. She ran a professionally smart race and didn’t even raise her heart rate.
Why are you mentioning heart rate so much for an 800m race lol who cares
Ever heard of David Rudisha?
She slammed the brakes on in front of a few real pros I hope she does it again they will run right over her LOL
See Bishop as proof of how getting boxed goes.
See nearly every women’s distance race for evidence of how terrible getting boxed or running in traffic goes. Odds of falling, getting shoved, stepping inside go up about 20% for every athlete within an arm’s reach.
I hope Mu wins it all but has to take the bit for gold.

Lol….. This “novice” is competing in the Olympics.
You’re most likely sitting at home working up the courage to ask your sister for a second date.

the novice easily qualifies while the real pros get boxed and don't make it out of the first round. makes sense.

Makes sense to me.
Sounds like perfect tactics.

LRC in a nutshell.
She's 19 & can run however she damn pleases. We should be cheering her on as a legitimate medal threat & as someone who will be the future of this event.
