I don't have much experience or backround in xc/track so I thought I'd try to get a little input. Most people I talk to in my local area that know the sport suggest I should look for a private coach for my 14 year old son. He is about to enter the 9th grade and has been running 2 years now. People are telling me he could go D1 if he is coached right the next couple years. His times from middle school are as follows: 800m- 2:11, 1600m- 4:43, 3200m- 9:55. He also ran a 17:20 5k on cross country last year at a varsity meet that let him enter. His training has basically been around 15 to 20 miles a week on average this past year. The high school coach he will have is open to an outside coach helping him out as long as he still participates with the team daily( which he wants). From looking at stats he will already be the fastest runner on the cross team this fall as a freshman. She told me she hasn't had any experience coaching a kid at that level for his age and would leave it up to me whether I sought out outside help or not. She was really helpful about it. My son is still waiting on his growth spurt. 5ft 4" 95lbs. Would it be worth it to hire a private coach or just let him train like the rest of the team and see how he progresses. Also, I have no idea where to find a private coach for a high schooler. How much $ do they run typically? Or are people just blowing smoke about how good he is?
