I 100% am bragging about her. It has taken 4 years to get her to try xc and the fact that she likes it makes me a proud father. I have an IAAF World Athletics profile I am not posting my profile however. I have zero experience in coaching kids and was simply curious as to what people think. Too many people on this site want to instantly slam someone with negativity versus being positive.
Hi i'm a female (what a surprise on this male dominated site) 800m runner so here's my piece, I would give my times/ WA profile to show I do actually run 800m but i don't want to give away my identity:
For a 12yr old who's never run it before that's good. Don't listen to the people on here who say otherwise. However, her enjoying it is the most important thing. Around her age, a little bit of training and a bit more practice might bring down the time greatly (I know people who improve in the ballpark of 10-30s in a year at that age, but it depends on the person so don't get too het up comparing), but don't get tempted to ramp up training/the kilometres too greatly. Many Letsrunners seem to think more miles = better, but for adolescent females that it certainly generally not the case, particularly for middle distance- I have seen way too many people get burnt out from too many kilometres a week. At 12years, the difference between people training regularly since they were 8 or whatever, and just starting out is huge so don't worry about comparisons, and 12y.o times mean nothing later down the line.
You won't know until she's older whether she's destined to be the next athing mu or ajee wilson, so just keep her enjoying the sport, and who knows she may end up really good.
I wish all the best for your daughter and i hope she continues to enjoy the sport as it's an excellent sport to be involved in, and hope this helps
