Absolute shambles in New Zealand, with the NZOC not selecting four T&F athletes who received invites from the IOC due to not fulfilling "top 16 requirements". Two athletes in the 100m, a javelin thrower, and 400m hurdler.
As mentioned previously on LetsRun, the 100m is the jewel in the crown at the Olympics, to have two athletes invited and to TURN THEM DOWN is an absolute joke, yet we would be willing to send athletes to the egg and spoon race, age group football and various other niche sports because our funding is determined by medals, not discipline or quality.
The reason this is important??? Any eyeballs on Athletics in NZ/any country is great. Why switch on the telly if you don't have a horse to back? People will argue "if they aren't good enough to get 16th, they aren't good enough - if every country adopted this policy...THERE WOULD ONLY BE 16 ATHLETES IN EACH FIELD, not to mention a stepping stone to potential future successes.
Peter Snell was ranked 25th globally in 1960 before he WON THE 800M!!!
Athletics is the focal point of the Games, and has the richest history of any sport in New Zealand.
Hoping other countries don't have draconian policies like ours, but would be interested to hear.
