Unfortunately, some aren't capable of figuring this out for themselves. Systemic racism is rampant. I do have a renewed hope that this administration can and will clean this mess up. One can only hope...
Hahahaha you think this administration can save any problem? They're too busy censoring posts on Facebook.
I agree that there is systemic racism in the Baltimore school district. The overall lack of diversity in the mayor's office and in the school commission are evident. We should definitely bus in some kids from the outlying areas and appoint some more commissioners so that the makeup of the board reflects the racial make-up of the community.
https://www.baltimorecityschools.org/board-commissionersOh, you mean it's ok when you do it?
Meanwhile a nearby upper middle class suburban school named ~1/3 of their students valedictorian because they had above a 4.0.
Do we believe they earned that? Or that parents complain so much that teachers relax their grades....
GPA is a meaningless stat when comparing from school to school.
Bear in mind that this is Covid era, learn from home, data. Normalcy in Baltimore is about 20%. Still shocking though.

School is like running. Most just don't have the talent and hard work can't fix slow.
That is what the ACT is for. Amazing how Asians score highest and blacks score lowest.
I have seen this in the workplace. We try to send the low performers to additional training but they are still low performers. I am sure that every 24 year old could be as fastvas Grant Fisher if they just trained more.
The other side of this apple is just as rotten.
Millions of kids have been "graduated" and are semi literate at best. With really no rules, no standards, no state testing and tons of school district data fixing, graduation rates in some of the worst schools in the country are sky rocketing.
Its a crime and a disaster waiting to happen as tens of thousands of unskilled, undisciplined, unmotivated workers show up.

Agreed...if you don't have certain standards that have to be met a diploma means nothing and if you don't hire these losers you will be called a racist.

In cities like Baltimore there needs to be a fundamental cultural shift in the familial and community level than can only be accomplished if some personal responsibility is taken . Just throwing money money at this is not going to solve the problem. A 1.0 GPA means the students and their parents simply couldn’t care less about their education.
The district ran on a $1.4 billion budget for only 78,000 students – a cost of $18,000 per pupil. Maryland state taxpayers put in approximately $1 billion, and the balance came from local and federal taxpayers.
A Baltimore mom recently learned her high school senior had a 0.13 GPA yet ranked 62/120 in his class. The student had flunked all but three classes during his first three years of high school.
The USA doesn't care about education. Many messages on this site are about how to get in to run in college, with little regard for the education part.

I really don't think this tells the whole story, does it account for the cost of 'free' federal programs like lunch or pre/aftercare? Not that I have an issue with them - just looking for a full accounting of how much is spent per pupil so we can understand where we are going wrong.
If you've ever been to Baltimore this is not surprising.
Not if the private school has to hire a fleet of security, provide transportation, provide full services for mentally and physically disabled, and so on and so on. Publics cannot turn anyone away......
Have you been to the red mining areas of Kentucky or Wva? All gop bruh.

When the education & grades of youth are this terrible the government could spend trillions of more dollars on the education system and it won’t make a whole lot of difference.
In these communities there needs to be a cultural shift on how education is viewed and it has to come from within said communities whether it’s from community leaders, parents, etc. A 1.0 GPA signifies that many of these youth are actively trying to fail.

Personal responsibility is the only solution to anyone’s problems.
Expecting other people to fix your life for you will never work, and trying to fix the world for people who don’t want it fixed won’t do anything either.
Personal responsibility. That’s the only answer.
