Yeah... I think I would have heard of another as I have followed masters athletics pretty closely over the last decade.

When we write the names of Chinese or Russian athletes, we don't use Chinese characters or Cyrillic alphabet. We somehow translate it to English letters.

So why, here, and elsewhere to be sure, do we deploy letters/marks/accents/etc that have no meaning in English?

When someone copies and pastes a name from a website that uses those characters the name appears the same on the message board.

Example: Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva
