Given that the records have not progressed in the high jump, long jump, or triple jump, I have to wonder if there are some thresholds beyond which people just aren't going to be able to throw themselves into/through the air, regardless of drugs, shoe technology, etc. You just don't see athletes, men or women, come close to record marks in any of these events, which is not the case in any other discipline. You can say that is because of doping but which track events have not had records set by dopers at some point or another?
The pole vault uses an implement that athletes can apply force to in order to hurl themselves into the air. With the changes in pole technology and the spread of quality coaching in that event, I can understand how performances can improve. Their are just a lot of variables there to be ironed out. The jumps, on the other hand, are just so basic. Dope the hell out of someone and put them in shoes with catapults in them. Are they ever going to be able to long jump 9.2x meters? Can a human being fly through the air that far under their own power?
