Why? She broke the rules that were established entering the competition. It’s not fair to the other athletes that followed the rules. She will face a 30-day ban retroactive to the time of the test and will be ineligible to compete as an individual in the 100 meters at the Olympics, but will be eligible for the 4 x 100. Hopefully, she learns her lesson about following the rules, wins gold in the 4 x 100, and then gold in the 100 in 2024.
What do you mean it’s not fair to the other athletes? It’s totally fair. The whole point of the anti-doping rules and the whole point as to why the athletes allow their privacy to be invaded regularly and why they let strangers stare at their private parts as they pee is to prevent people from getting an unfair advantage in the competition due to a drug they took. Sha’Carri may have been foolish to smoke weed but it didn’t impact the other athletes’ chances of finishing top 3 at all - if anything it helped their chances.
If I was another athlete, I wouldn’t want to go if I got to go because someone smoked weed. It’s not supposed to be about who can follow some pointless rule.
WADA shouldn’t be acting as the morality police. What’s next, are we going to ban people who have affairs, abortions, etc? In fact, I know of a US athlete who won a medal in 2016 that was unfaithful to his or her partner. Should their medal be stripped?
