So much more leg action in Connor's stride than Woody's. It's got to be more efficient to run like Woody.

Mantz has no speed, it constantly looks like he is kicking the whole race.

agree, reminds me of runner Parker Stinson, also looks like he is kicking his last lap
Waste of motion. You usually never see these exaggerated-motion guys international championships for a reason. It's expensive to have arms flailing and legs with high kicks when you are not even going world class pace.

I would say that his ultimate potential will be at around 13:10/27:20/60:30/2:06-2:08.

Mantz: for bragging rights he might become the fastest mechanical engineer on planet earth. At least he won’t have employment problems once his running career ends.
Many high level of runners don’t really have a Plan B. Mantz is set.
Mens sana in corpore sano
You guys say he has no speed? He's ran 3:37. You guys say he's not world class? At age 24 he just finished 5th in the Olympic trials and beat a multiple time Olympic medalist en route. You say he has a energy-wasting form? Have you ever heard that your natural form is your most economical?
Mark my words, in 3 years when he makes the 2024 Olympics the same people that said he had terrible form and would never be world class are going to be fan-boying him and his ability to kick from a mile out.

+ 1 - yes that 337 was absolutely outstanding and unexpected from someone like him. That time is equal to a 355 mile approximately which is very adequate speed for a long distance runner.
Mantz: Mormon wunderkid, mechanical engineer to boot.
His progress these last few years has been absolutely outstanding and almost unprecedented in the US. Indeed, his 800 m base is not fast at all compared to most 1500 m runners who eventually run 337 but his endurance is through the roof. That is to say, his ability to run close to his best top speed is outstanding.

Every athlete has strengths and weaknesses they bring to the table. People focus on form because it's so visual.
Truth is, people can't see what's happening on multiple non-visible levels that predict success in running. Mantz could be an anomalous outlier in multiple other areas that would make up for his kinesthetic inefficiencies. He could have remarkable lactate tolerance or lactate clearance. He could have enormous V02 max. He could be extremely tough mentally(very unpopular to suggest we aren't all equally tough btw). He could have multiple elements that more than make up for his kinesiology.
His form had been a constant source of criticism on these boards. But he's continued to improve. He's one of our brighter rising distance stars. Maybe his form will lower his ceiling. Maybe it's just right for the way he's made. Either way he's an outstanding athlete and has a long career ahead of him. He's not the next Kipchoge. He's not Bekele. But neither is Kincaid.
By the way on another topic but still related to Mantz being a nerd, so is Mason Ferlic, the 818 steeple chaser for the University of Michigan selected for team USA for Tokyo in Steeplechase. Ferlic is going to pursue a PhD in statistics at the University of Michigan.
It seems high running performance and high general intelligence generally go hand-in-hand. It’s a reflective, inward driven sport usually associated with fundamental introverts. Ferlic is no exception.
