Are strides basically just 50-80m sprints?
Also, is it beneficial to do some strides before a workout?

Yes on both accounts. The "sprints" are relaxed with a focus on form. You should need only about 1 min recovery for the next rep. If not, you are running them too hard.
Yes. They are also not all-out sprints, but closer to 80% effort.
I also think doing them before workouts helps. 2-3 just to wake the legs up.
I do strides as 100-150m reps at 800m start pace.
A good rule of thumb is run them just barely past that threshold of when you tell yourself “okay I’m sprinting now”
As others have said, if a walkback/ 1 minute recovery doesn’t feel like enough or you start to feel lactic during the session, you are doing it wrong.

Yo, CopperRunner! Those 10-20 stride sessions you do? Long sprinters (400m and 400H) call those workouts "extensive tempo." These workouts can apply to 800m training, as you have discovered. You may benefit from reading about extensive tempo and intensive tempo workouts and how to periodize them over a yearlong cycle.
PS not to be confused with tempo running for distance runners.
Thanks buddy! So is it a good idea to 4-6 x 100m sprints/strides before a workout?
Yes, that is a good idea. How many/how long kinda depends on personal preference but a few strides help get the legs going before faster intervals and some use them before tempo/threshold work as well.

Yeah that’ll work just great. Try doing the same after your easy runs as well IF your legs feel fresh enough that you can sprint with good form.
And Hound Dawg, thanks for the heads up! I’ll for sure look into it
I remember last time I saw this asked, it started a huge fight and it was like 10 pages.
Do strides barefoot.
I’m surprised to see so many people saying that strides are sprints. While some sessions people do are quicker, you’ll see them often done at 3-5k pace. They are faster and focusing on form, but not really sprints.
How did Eamonn Coghlan get that insane kick though? He did 20x400 in 1:00 and 6 x 1200 in 3:03, but what did he do for raw speed?
