Can he make the team in either event? He's run 9.9 twice this season, but he's run the 100m 7 times. He's run 200m twice and his fastest was 20.24. I just don't see him as a threat in the 200. He has a shot at 100, but he's not a lock like he would be for 400...

He's evidently been coaching himself which is rarely wise. I fear that Fred has blown his chances and that's a real shame.

I look at it this way. If you had a chance to 10x your salary would you take it? He would go from a guy the rest of the world has never heard of to a god among men overnight.

Very bizarre. Perhaps this is his under the table "doping" ban. He can't do his best event.
He is 7th on the performance list at 400 for USA this year, with a bunch of people just behind him. He's 4th in the 100 and has been more consistent than the runners ahead of him.

It's not really that stupid. He's got the 4th best time in the world in the 100, 6th in the 400. But at the same time the US is STACKED in the 100, with 6 in the top 6 in the world. It's a bold strategy, Cotton, let's see if it pays off for him.

Isn’t top 8 all it takes to make the relay? I don’t know what the incentive is here for Kerley, but making the team isn’t exactly a long shot. If his 100m form is indicative of anything he should be able to snag a spot in the 200 too ( 9.9 + 44.6 =19.7?).

If he did not get clearance to be 4x400 relay eligible, this is a horrible decision and a huge risk to his gold medal prospects.
If somehow he is still 4x4 eligible then its a surprising but not as terrible decision.
He may even have good reasons for this we are not aware of.

Boling doesn't have the trials standard in the 100 I believe but has the 200.
If you are good at the 100 and good at the 400 you are de facto good at the 200 because of physiology, assuming you aren’t terrible at curve running

I am not going to yell from Peanut Gallery and say Fred Kerley is making a bad decision. Kerley knows his body. Four-hundred metre training is grueling. If Kerley feels his body breaks down training for 400m, how can I say he is making a poor decision? If Kerley believes he's 9.85 or better 100m man, who knows?
