Her mom is Laurie Gomez and her dad is Bob Henes. Both ran at NC State and were All-Americans. They both went to high school in Ohio and were state champs in various events in track and XC. Coincidentally, Elly’s boyfriend is Luis Grijalva. Both of them had great races.

They probably first met at a meet and have opportunities to see each other that way. I believe that NAU & NC State have been at a lot of the same XC & track meets. I think they've been together for a while.
