Are they letting Fazio advance because she was knocked down?

Looks like they did move her up to finals because she was impeded, but now there's 11 qualifiers, but it's a nine-lane track. Does anyone understand how the 800M women's finals will be run?
First results posted were wrong. Looks like 10 qualifiers ... so they will fit ten on the track.

You can go 2 in a lane...I'm sure they will manage, we go 40+ in 5k's
I think we will hear more about this ... I bet you someone is going to complain. It looks like they are putting Fazio in Lane 10, but it's still going to be crowded.
That is ridiculous. Yes she was impeded and fell but SHE RAN 2:16! She is 13 seconds slower than the last qualifier! She did not lose that kind of time due to he fall. Even if she lost 8 seconds to the fall she still finishes in last place. Did she take a short nap before getting to her feet?
Looks like she knew that a protest would be filed and she would advance anyway so she might as well just jog the race and conserve energy. Let everyone else bust their butts to qualify while she uses minimal effort.
That doesn't factor in.
I think they should start putting 10-12 typically in an 800 final.
Leave the middle lanes (fastest seeds) with one per lane and double starting from the first and last.
Anyone have the video of this?

Are the letting Huerta and McDonald through as well?
Huerta especially, as she still managed 2:06 after breaking stride and having to swing way outside

Hi there,
Huerta’s coach here. No they are not advancing her either. The final field is set. It is very frustrating. I don’t understand why they advanced Fazio when the fall occurred in the first 250m and it looked like she contributed to the fall anyways. Samantha feels bittersweet. At the time, she understood that was part of racing and was happy to have stayed on her feet and not end her career with a fall. Now it’s very upsetting because if she fell, it might have actually advanced her. The protesting in our sport is getting a bit out of hand. I don’t like how more and more people are getting referee’d in or out. I understand if this happened in the last 100-150m of a close race…..but the first 250m? Come on.
Agreed
Did you file a protest?
Agreed. I feel bad for Samantha. As I watched the replay my exact thought was why Fazio and not Sam. Frustrating and ridiculously unfair. Were I in your position I'd be very upset.... sorry, my friend.
Fazio got clipped and wiped out through no fault of her own. It was early in the race and she had time to come back, but it looked like a hard fall. I don't think you can compare that with having to go a little wide early in the race. I think they gave it to Fazio because it was a hard fall and she looked like she was shaken up. You couldn't really expect her to get up and pull a Heather Dorniden.
Yes, we protested and nothing happened. Also, a “little wide” is disingenuous. Especially when it’s coming off the turn (losing even more ground) in a race where they went out in 27-28 at 200m and sub 60 @ 400m. That’s a very large disadvantage in a barn burner 800m. Also, she was on one foot trying to keep her balance during all this. I guess our balance work we did in weights this year kept her on her feet.
Anyways, the LSU runner also fell but was DQ’d. Did she not get clipped as well? She was in front of Fazio. Unless she tripped over her own two feet. Fazio is slightly behind her shoulder around 250m and tucks in closer to the rail before they both fall. It’s a tough angle to really call from the television, but it’s possible Fazio also ran right up on the LSU runner and helped box her in from behind during an aggressive race.
To be clear I am not mad at Fazio or the Richmond coaches. We tried to protest and it was given in their favor. That’s the system at play and it’s up to us as coaches to try to work it to favor our athlete. I am more upset at the system itself and it taking away from how cut-and-dry our sport is supposed to be. I would prefer if no one advanced and it gets chalked up to “that’s racing.” Much easier pill to swallow.
whatever the review committee saw on their cameras (they don’t use espn broadcast) must have clearly shown that the LSU runner was at fault somehow, unfortunate as that is for her. That is why she has a DQ and a rule reference next to her name. That rule should explain their reasoning for the dq. It must have also shown that the richmond runner was not at fault and did not clip or trip anybody, or she would not be advanced. The committee would not advance or dq anybody unless whatever camera angle they have showed something very, very clearly. They don’t give free passes and they don’t hand out dq’s for no reason at a meet like this. All three coaches impacted should have protested in the interest of their athletes - all three are well within their right to do so and that’s simply doing their job . The result should be trusted because that is the job of the committee to review - not any of the coaches or athlete impacted. The coaches job is to make sure it gets looked at. Nobody except the committee saw the angles they have, including those coaches. But based on results what we can tell is that LSU broke a rule, based on evidence seen by the committee, and Richmond was impacted enough to be advanced. We cannot draw any conclusions on the cal st Fullerton athlete because there is nothing listed by her name, but if their coach did protest, they would have been given an answer by the committee for why the protest was not upheld. When you protest you are given an answer and a reason either in your favor or against. It is not a case of ‘nothing happened’ after you protest.
