What is the rationale for this? Why do you cut off entries before the qualifying window closes. The only thing I can think of is because they want to get more money.

They should let him in.
Is there a way to find out if Rupp is registered?
Coaches have circumvented the convoluted process by entering athletes prior to the entry deadline and then updating their performances.
This is dumb, but just is how it works and people should be aware of that. You need to “enter in case of qualification”
Isn’t this always the case that you need to enter as a declaration even if you’re not qualified?
One would think Tyson has a Nike insider that will fix the problem.

Rupp is entered. If Mwaura is allowed to enter it would push Rupp to 25th fastest and the field is supposed to be 24. However Lomong, Fisher and Chelimo haven’t declared. I’d guess that at least Chelimo won’t race the 10k.
It's Pat Tyson's fault for not entering him. There are tons of guys entered into the trials that won't make it but were hoping to further their time after entering.

Poor coaching. He let down his athlete.
This kind of nonsense. Who the hell have you ever coached? Needing attention is a good name for you. Tyson is a great coach!
Looks like something similar happened today in women's 1500 semis.
Michaela Degenero/CO & Oliva Howell/IL both broke 4:10 to set big prs and are now right around 30th on the US performance list for 2021 and thus potential candidates to round out the field of 30 for the Trials next week.
However, they will not count because their coaches did not enter them in the Trials by the June 8th deadline.
In contrast, Anna Camp-Bennett/BYU just ran a 4:09.22 pr and is now very much a candidate to fill out the field because her coach entered her -- with a 4:11.63 former pr from earlier this spring -- prior to the deadline.
So, Pat Tyson is not the only one grinding his teeth.

U know diddly squat. First of all Pat Tyson even acknowledged he didn’t know he would set a 37 second PR. Cut him some slack
Blaming the coach is a sure fire way to ignore the convoluted process at play. Both can be true. Maybe the coach should have entered their athlete. Maybe. But now they have the standard and should get to race. This needs to be fixed regardless of who you want to blame.
They missed the registration deadline.
This is why Pat Tyson is coaching at Gonzaga and not Oregon.
Attention to details.
This is dumb. Why does the registration deadline need to end before the qualifying window does? There's no rational reason for that and it's just a dumb decision by USATF. Reminds me of the 2016 marathon trials where you had to declare if you wanted fluids or not before the qualifying window closed - thankfully they fixed those dumb things in Atlanta so hopefully will fix this in the future as well.
And yes, Pat should have entered him just in case. But at the same time no one anticipated the 10K being as crazy fast as it was - even if he thought James could run that fast he likely didn't think he would do it at NCAAs.
I was not a 27:40 something 10,000m runner. I however ran under an old standard of 29:10 or something in the early 2000's. I was 5 seconds under the standard entry time if the field did not exceed size limit which it was well under. Myself and 2 other runners were under the mark with 29:05, 29:05, and a 29:07. They listed us as not qualified and took a 14:07 5,000m runner who got last in the race, a 29:14, and a 29:22 10,000m runner instead because they were Pro. I thought it was garbage a standard is a standard and there should be no loop holes. My guess is James Mwaura is either not a citizen or they are playing games in favor of someone else they want to make the team by eliminating competition.

Back in 2016 they accepted up to 27th rank at 28:27 instead of the stated 24 entries (even though the standard was 28:15) because 27th rank was Nike boy Chris Derrick
Rupp is entered but not accepted along with many others

What a stupid process ( I had no idea it existed).
To the poster bashing Pat, he's a great coach.

James is native to Tacoma WA and now holds the state record for a WA-born runner.

James was born in Kenya. His family immigrated to the US when he was 7 y.o.

Opps. He ran his whole scholastic career in WA and I wasn't aware of his birthplace, thanks.
