I did the following workout:
2x (500, 200 jog, 300 )
with 400 walk + 400 jog in between sets
73, 40
72, 41
What do you think? What about if I switch from my 6 year old, beat up spikes to a pair of the special nikes.

Yes a 1:54 looks doable. New spikes never hurt either
No
No. Maybe 1:58.
What's your PR?

1:56.
Maybe I just didn’t have a good workout in me today, but I actually felt pretty good about it. Maybe you’re underestimating the difference between 400 and 500.
A 73 for 500 means you hit 400 meters around 58. That seems a little slow if you want to run 1:54.
But don't worry about one workout and don't let an internet forum get in your head. The 800 is a crazy race. Every time I PRed in the 800, it was usually by about two seconds. If you've already run 1:56, I bet you have a 1:54 in you. Don't go out too fast and then race your opponents, not the clock. Good luck!
Even a 2:02 or under 2 for sure is really fast truLy
I think so. 2 broken 800s faster than goal pace with a 6-8 minute break between them? Seems like a good target to me. Especially given the pace on the 300s.
I’d say you are capable of it. Looking at the splits on paper, a 1:54 may seem like a stretch. But if you get into some fast races where you can just compete (fast enough field that just by being in the thick of the race, you’ll be on pace), I think you are capable of it. Try to get into at least 3-4 races this season - enough to have some trial and error with tactics, pacing, etc.
More important than the workout — is...
What were your last 3 races? When? Results?
What is your most recent 400?

Another comment from slow twitcher with no experience running fast.
Fastest 8s and 15s/16s/miles are run using sprint spikes used for 200&400s
Dragonfly's are too squishy for 800s
Foam sucks in sprint spikes and carbon plates are not new in sprint spikes. They're stiff a.f. not squishy 5k shoes
Many if not most professional 1500 runners are using the Dragonflys. I do not believe they would use them if they sucked. For the 800, I can see the Dragonflys being a bit of overkill on the foam but some 800 runners have run very fast in them. I highly doubt they slow you down in an 800. The new foam is breaking the conventional pattern of thinking that cusion = non-responsive. Also, there is no reason to insult someone by calling them a slow twitcher and accusing them of being slow. If you are so fast, let's see a link to your performances.
