Hello friends.
Running Grandma’s this year. Do I have what it takes to go sub 2:50? (I know, I know…You never know what will happen race day, each runner is so different, impossible to tell with just a few workouts, etc. I get it. But I find these threads kind of fun.)
Background: 38M. Didn’t run in HS or college. Got fat and then took up casual jogging a few years back. First marathon in 2017 off poor training—3:40. Last marathon was January 2020—2:58 (averaged 50 MPW). My last PR was a 10 miler in December where I basically hit one hour on the dot. The funny thing is I didn’t even approach it as a TT. Just decided to run “hard but smooth” during a stressful work week. Looked down at my watch at 5 miles. Feeling good, I then decided to see what I could do for 10. (Note: This was measured by Strava. Yes, I was wearing Next%.)
I do two workouts per week, including a long run where I usually mix in faster paces (aka Daniels training).
I’m averaging just about 60 MPW on this 18 week cycle. So far I’ve done two 20-21 milers, five 18 milers, and a number of 16-17 mile long runs. Last 20 miler is this weekend (10 E + 10 MP)
Here are some sample workouts:
Feb. 27 – 17.2 @ 6’57 (30 minutes @ MP w/ 2 threshold miles thrown in)
April 3 – 18 @ 6’34. Probably my best of the cycle. 6 miles steady, then 3 min “fast”/2 min. steady floats, then 4 @ MP. Wasn’t looking at the watch. Very flat route.
April 24 – 16 @ 7’02. 8 E + 8 @ 6’25.
May 7 – 20 @ 6’51. 4 x 3 miles @ MP with 1 mile steady floats in between. This was hard but I hit pace.
May 15 – 17 @ 6’55. 4 MP + 10 min threshold + 4 MP. Second set of MP felt really smooth.
May 18 (midweek workout) – 12 @ 6’46. 6 @ 6’13 on hills with about 1.5 miles steady toward the end.
