Why isn't anyone talking about the fact that Steven Gardiner's 992 day 400m win streak was snapped Tue. in DRAMATIC fashion?

I thought he just slipped or something because the track was super wet, but then I saw he had to carried off the track so he's probably injured.

But that was a big PB for Cherry, his PB was 44.6 before this.

the most noteworthy part of your original post is that you didn't put Michael Norman in that list of 'studs'.

Clear favourite for me if he can turn up at his best. Kerley is an enigma, WVN been out too long, Kirani James past his best, Gardiner the biggest threat probably.

I like the fact that Norman's first few races have been mid to low 44's, nothing mind blowing, hopefully he's timed his season a little better this time around

Norman is a good runner but calling him the clear favorite is ridiculous. Gardiner has clearly been the best 400m runner in the world for the past few years. Kerley also beat Norman at USAs and came home with a WC bronze in 2019. Van Niekerk is the world record holder and after his major injury problems he seems to be finding his form again. I would be unsurprised to see him at the top again this year. Those three are the clear favorites. All of them have a better case than Norman.

WTF happened there?

Through 300m, he looked like he was on WR pace. So, did he just seize/cramp and collapse from going out way too hard? Or is this a legit injury?

Clear favourite in my mind, is what I said. I appreciate not everyone feels that way. However, he's more than just "a good runner". PB's of 9.86, 19.70 and 43.45 mark you out as something exceptional, and more than warrants a place in the top 5 "studs" to be potentially competing for the gold in Tokyo.

Disappointed when carrying an injury in both trial and WC's in 2019, his only major championships so far, so I understand the caution. But he's a freak, and if he's at his best in Tokyo then he'll be very hard to beat indeed

This is the answer. He cruised the first 100m before running the second 100m all out. He maintained a lot of that speed through 300m and gradually slowed before his legs were welded to the track. It would've been a spectacular time had he finished that last 100m like the previous 300m.

It appears that he is fit enough to win gold in Tokyo, but his race strategy needs work.

How many 400m races has he run in that 992 days? Anyone know?

This^^^. It appears he absolutely gassed himself that second 100+ meters of the race. Maybe trying a new tactic? He was absolutely flying. Can't imagine how badly that last 50-60 meters hurt. Imagine Kipchoge absolutely blasting the 2nd 10k of his next marathon or Jackob running a low 50s lap the second lap of the 15 this weekend. I imagine it always ends the same way, even though my initial reaction was its "just" a 400.
