Marshall University are this years men’s NCAA championships 1:0 win over Indiana in overtime.
Initially thinking “how great is that, Marshall University, never heard of them - must have been a big underdog - way to go”, So I looked at their web site to learn more about the team and coaches. To my surprise and then massive frustration, the teams roster has 25 foreign athletes listed. 25! What the heck is that? Why is that allowed to happen?
On this site, from time to time, there is concern raised about the numbers of foreign athletes on track and field teams, being good and/or bad, etc. Thought this soccer example was pertinent to that conversation.
The generosity of the United States towards other countries athletes is amazing. I was a foreign athlete who competed in the NCAA several decades ago; am forever thankful for the experience, knew then I was taking a spot from an American and that I had better work really hard to keep earning that spot - all of which I am extremely grateful for and give back to. Back then there was a couple of foreign athletes on my team which we knew was coming at the expense of tax payers and US athletes.
I think it is very very wrong to have possibly the entire starting eleven lineup and so many on a team being foreign athletes.
What Marshall University accomplished was great on paper, am sure their fans are celebrating and the Marshall University community and alumni are giving high-fives. The reality though is it came at the loss of US high school soccer players experiences who wanted to play in the NCAA, and at a cost to US taxpayers who subsidize University at the state level.
Solution: roster percentage caps of foreign athletes.
Suggestion to the NCAA: 25% cap.
