Isn't this normal? Aren't the 5ks usually one of the last events? So you enter all of your guys with the qualifying times and actually run them all if team points are needed?

Yes. The 5000m is normally the next to last event, right before the 4x400m. There will likely be quite a few DNS.

Ya, I doubt 40 end up racing. But 38 people in a 5k heat would still be pretty big. I remember running the 10k at regionals with 48 guys, it was a 100 meter long train of people doing an 'indian run' since it went out slow, everyone passing on the outside until you find yourself at the back and then you have to go up on the outside.

ACC woman have 61 on the start list, there was over 40 a few years ago at the start

yea it was the university freshman 1500m I recall a few fell. I had a few nice spike marks on the shin. Bob Henes won the race.
