He did fine. Personally I think his indoor 3:32 was more impressive. But that should be good enough for the AUS team
3:33 isn't fine, its darn impressive IN CONTEXT
Damn. Looked like a man among boys in that race.

Whore
Why is it that 4 out of top 5 1500 guys in the word right now are from Australia? What are they drinking down there?

3:33 in wind+rain > 3:32 indoor perfect weather tuned banked track
I disagree with that wrote:

not to mention he led the last 800m from the pacer stepping off and still won with a pretty huge margin of victory

...or maybe they just already had their main track season, including their national championship? And most of the actual top runners in the world are just now coming out of the base phase.

oh? or maybe McSweyn was already a world #5 last year, who gets beat by Edwards, and now we have Hoare easily running away with the best time of all three without competition and in poor weather. I can't see more than 2-3 guys running faster than these three.

Yeah but, he's still competing against the other Aussie boys for a place on the team but with the covid stuff he'll get a pass for not running the Australian Championships as it would have required him to quarantine for 14 days in a hotel room, no good for obvious reasons.
The winner of the Australian Championships is an automatic Olympic selection provided they have run the qualifying time, winner Jye Edwards did, 3:33.99, Stewie McSweyn was second, 3:34.55, no other qualifiers in the Australian Championships after them. Hoare ran 3:32.35 indoors, so there's your three if McSweyn decides to double up with 1500/5k, if not Matthew Ramsden should get selected with his 3:34.97, provided no one betters it of course.
The Australian Championships being so early compared to Europe, etc has always been a problem, peaking for them and then having to try and peak again a few months later, Athletics Australia always refuse to change the dates for an Olympic year.
That's life down under. wrote:

I hadn’t seen or heard about the Jye Edwards over McSweyn result. One minute you’re confident that Hoare/McSweyn/Ramsden are the clear Australian top-3 at 1500, and the next, a young dude named Jye changes everything.
On a different note, I still believe McSweyn’s best hope for a medal is to focus on the 1500 and hope that Cheruiyot or Jakob turn it into a time-trial, where he might take a bronze in 3:29-3:30.x. I just don’t see him yet having the strength to kick as well as Barega, Kejelcha, Kiplimo, Ahmed, et al in a truly World-class, potentially sub-13 5k.
Incidentally, Ramsden didn't have a very good run in the Australian Championships, finished 5th in 3:38.57. So having just squeaked under the qualifying time of 3:35 with his 3:34.97 run in January he could still have trouble getting selected if McSweyn does opt for just the 5k as Athletics Australia selectors have been known to work in mysterious ways in the past.
Result: Final
1 Jye Edwards (NSW) 3:33.99
2 Stewart McSweyn (TAS) 3:34.55
3 Rorey Hunter (NSW) 3:37.32
4 Ryan Gregson (QLD) 3:37.84
5 Matthew Ramsden (WA) 3:38.57
6 Callum Davies (QLD) 3:38.94
7 James Hansen (TAS) 3:39.21
8 Adam Spencer (VIC) 3:40.86
9 Isaac Heyne (SA) 3:41.75
10 Jordan Williamsz (VIC) 3:44.62

now that's funny.......
I suspect McSweyn wasn't peaking for Nationals ... he already had a qualifier and no one was close on times. He just went out to win it and confirm his selection. Edwards surprised by going with his pace and then passing him in the home straight.
When it counts McSweyn will be better, but Hoare is look good!
