Also in statistics an important measure is the median (number from which 50% are older, and 50% younger).
Francie Larrieu Smith says hello.
800m Nicole Teter was 31 in 2004, not 20 years old.
Maybe note the Decathlon - Kip Janvrin 36 in 2000.
Given that the oldest age on that list is 37 and the oldest average age is 28.9, I'd say that no, age is not just a number. Why no 40, 50, 60, 70, 80 year olds? Because they're too old to compete at the elite level!

She was 39 at her last Olympic appearance. She's 68 now. If age is just a number, why hasn't she been to the Olympics in 29 years?
LetsRun trying the Flotrack, Barstool, ESPN method with membership tiers. Come on guys no one really cares that much about running. Now I get care even less..... Good luck to your 'VIPs'....hahaha.
No, age is real and it will kill you some day.

Yeah can someone copy/paste Jon’s list for us low-tier LRCers?
The real interest (to me) is in the marathon. I took the ages as of the trials, and included 2020 marathon trials:
2000
Rod DeHaven - 33
Peter DeLaCerda - 38
Mark Coogan - 34
Average for 2000: 31.7
2004
Alan Culpepper - 31
Meb Keflezighi - 28
Dan Browne - 28
Average for 2004: 29.0
2008
Ryan Hall - 25
Ritz - 24
Brian Sell - 29
Average for 2008 (Actual date Nov 2007): 26..0
2012
Meb Keflezighi - 36
Ryan Hall - 29
Abdi - 35
Average for 2012: 33.3
2016
Galen Rupp - 29
Meb Keflezighi - 40
Jared Ward - 27
Average for 2016: 32.0
2020
Galen Rupp - 33
Jacob Riley - 31
Abdi - 43
Average for 2020: 35.7
Average age over 6 Olympic Trials: 31.3
Youngest, Ritz in 2008 @ 24
Oldest, Abdi in 2020 @ 43
Biggest age gap in trials, 2020, 12 years between Jacob Riley and Abdi.

Technically age varies on frame of reference, so biological processes as your cells deteriorate and replicate is what will kill you.
Crazy how Emma Coburn was already the oldest qualifier in the women's steeple in the last 20 years. Very possible all three female qualifiers this year will be older than she was in 2016.
Maybe people 40 and over are identifying as 20 year olds. You can be whatever you want nowadays.
I don't think anyone really believes that "age is just a number".
I think it's just a passive way of recognizing that time waits for no man, there's no alternative to aging so you must deal with it the best that you can.
Nobody really believes that a 55 year old can run as fast as a 25 year old, but then a few years ago I never would have thought that people would talk themselves into believing that men should be allowed to compete in women's events either, so what do I know?

13 years between Meb and Ward in 16.

The steeple one is a bit misleading since it's only been an Olympic event since 2008.

You're correct but there is a strong correlation .

Pretty pedantic. Technically your head is older than your feet due to gravitational time dilation on the order of billionths of a second over a lifetime.

Yes, but the original statement that "age will kill you" is also pedantic. So just doing some like-for-like.
Mmm.
That's hot.
