He is from MA so obviously his accent is from MA.
Smith is a normal American dude that is so insecure that he puts on that accent. It is NOT his real accent. He tries to appear "sexy" and "hip" but he ain't fooling me.
I'm originally from MA myself, and nobody in MA talks like that. If he was born and raised in MA then I would be very surprised.
I've always assumed he moved to MA from somewhere else.

Colin Bennie went to the same Central Mass high school as Mike and does not have a "Bahston" accent either. Part of it is that Mike has a very deep voice.
He fooled Rachel Schneider, who he coached in college and is now dating.

He said in flotrack's "running with the boys" that when people ask where he's from he says DC. I also remember reading he went to russia and taught in an orphanage or something along those lines.
His accent is explained by a deviated septum.

I don't know what that accent is but I'm thankful he doesn't have the MA accent.
That's why we call it a Boston accent not an "MA accent". Outside of a 15 mile radius of the city that accent changes and what happens West of 495 no one knows. We don't venture there.
I used to work out by Worcester, and the "Bahston" accent is more prevalent there than in Boston. Though it can still be very hit and miss on whether people have it, rich towns being less likely.
