America needs runners like Yuki
I love this so much. HUGE RESPECT for Yuki. NO american pro runner would ever compete like this.

yep, love it. we might not even ever get to see galen run a 10k ever again, let alone an 800m
I give him credit, most runners are scared to get whopped in a secondary+ event. But his lack of speed is a concern. He could run a faster marathon with better speed. Unreal endurance. For context, Rupp could run 203 800m repeats all day.
I agree. What did he run? 2:02? The man is fierce. He ran out of speed and oxygen, the wheels were coming off, and he just powered on through without complaints. Good man.
Great stuff. Thanks for posting.
Amazing video. Love seeing athletes try distances far below or above their main events
Yuki can just bust out a 2:02??
We are not worthy.
Can anyone run a marathon in H:MM faster than they can run an 800 in M:SS?
Great to see him running an off distance and not to take anything away from him, but I was expecting sub 2 for sure from a world class marathoner.
Seems like he doubled up on a 1500 and a 5000 in another meet too. He’s wearing same singlet in both races, so I assume they were on the same day.
he is Japan's Prefontaine
It looks like he's running on ice on the second lap. I like that BLEEDING face! He really put it ALL on the LINE!

This may surprise you, but Yuki does not have Galen's track pedigree
Pedigree or not, he split around 8:34 at 3000. That's just a bit above 4:30 mile pace in a 5000. Compared to that, a 2:02 all out 800 looks very slow.

One of the runners at the hoka 100 km race ran a 60 metre race in late 2019, his time was 9.06 I think.

I think the all out 800 was a shock to his body and he just ate lactic acid. That's why it wasn't much faster than his 3k pace. He doesn't go anaerobic or activate his fast twitchies, like, ever. Tell an ultra marathoner to sprint and they very likely won't be fast.

I think Yuki's participation at such low key events shouldn't be confused with serious efforts, he mostly uses them for training. Yeah, he's really slow for a 2:07 marathoner, but also not that slow. For example you can see him appear on the same channel the 800m was posted on quite regulary (basically the guy behind it films basically every track session of the Comodi-iida corporate team and Yuki often joins them) and he regulary shows better shape there than some of his racing results might indicate. For example here you can see him closing a 9x400m workout with a 500m in 1:15, which is a faster pace than his 2:03 800m:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50jmb-Mz5XkIm glad you guys enjoyed the link. Of course he’s not “serious” about the distance. But he also didn’t hold back. Whether it’s a workout or not, he was hurting.

There, I fixed that for you.
I’m a D2 female runner. Our coach explicitly told us not to visit LetsRun forums.
