Cole Hocker and Cooper Teare Going Pro?

I have a connection at Nike that said, off the record of course, that Nike will extend pro offers to Cooper and Cole to sign right after NCAA outdoors (but before the Olympic trials). Nike is trying to lock them in but still allow them to run the outdoor NCAA season so that Univ of Nike (I mean, U of Oregon) can win their national title as a team.

Any thoughts or predictions? I can't see Cole or Cooper going to any brand other than Nike.

It sounds like they genuinely aren't sure yet about whether they will go pro or not based on this interview. Either that or they are really good at keeping it under the radar.

You are making the leap from Nike extending them offers to meaning definitively that they are signing with Nike. You are aware that athletes are allowed to decline offers, no?

That said, yes I think they will sign with Nike like all good Oregon runners.

Nike is making an offer, but still curious for others to predict whether they would take it or not and whether anyone could foresee another brand bidding against Nike for them, especially going into an Olympic year

They are going pro after NCAA outdoors. You have to cash in on an Olympic year, and Teare and Hocker have really good chances to make the team. They will sign with Nike. For their sake, I hope they don’t fully peak at NCAAs so that they have a shot at the Trials.

Why would you leave a situation/enviromnent that got you to a 3:50 mile? Why not stick with what has been working especially if you still have eligibility?

Keep bringing down the times in the rest of your tenure at Oregon and your asking price as a pro is a lot higher 2-3 years from now.

This is why:

If they want, they could keep the same environment and go pro. They can keep pursuing a degree if they want. They can stay in Eugene if they want. They can keep the same coach if they want. They could race at all the same races (or better races) with the exception of conference and national meets.

5k is loaded, and I don’t see him anywhere near what is needed for the afterburners needed in a typical usot 1500m last lap.

5k is loaded, and I don’t see him anywhere near what is needed for the afterburners needed in a typical usot 1500m last lap.

Mead has had a really rough 2020 and 2021. I don't see him as a contender for the 5,000m. Hill also hasn't ran that well recently. Not sure why Kebenei is even on this list. He is a steeplechaser. I would also remove Kipchichir who is more of a 10,000m guy. Seeing Klecker run 13:06 I think he should be added. Teare has only run 13:17 but I think he can run a bit faster this spring. A sub 13:10 wouldn't surprise me and if the trials is a tactical race he'll be in the mix at the end.

Cooper Teare and Cole Hocker are probably the best chances America has at a global distance medal (other than Brazier of course) in this years Olympic Games. So yes they should go pro immediately.

You think a guy with a 13:17 5k PR and a new 3:50 mile PR will be America's best medal contender?? I agree he is probably in better than 13:17 5k shape now, but probably not under 13:10. There are several Americans ahead of him there, and most of those Americans aren't medal contenders. And in the mile with a 3:50 mile, he's behind Johnny G, Centro, Craig Engels and probably a couple others.

These two runners are great, but let's slow down thinking they're going to be favorites to make our olympic team and slow really really far down saying they're going to be medal contenders.

A 3:50 mile/3:34 1500 and 13:10's don't make you a medal contender, they make you an olympic team contender at best.

That’s great, and I’d largely agree with you. However, remember that Mead comes for blood when it comes to international teams. Know that Kebenei is rumored to be considering the 5. Adding klecker, that puts Teare behind 7 athletes in my mind (lomong, klecker, kincaid, bor , fisher, mcgorty, Chelimo). Slim chances in my opinion, and is sunk if it’s tactical.

Interesting that Teare talks about maybe getting a bunch of guys coming back and trying for a triple crown. Hard to imagine them winning cross even if Teare and Hocker are top 5-10 unless they get a bunch of transfers...

ND has 2 13:45 guys who didn't make top 7. Oregon won't be close to top 2.

Thats what happened to Edward Chesereck..stayed to long at the college level instead of running against World class competition
