This does not exactly make it shocking that he could win NCAA Cross Country 7 years later.

Was he in college then? BYU always seems to be able to find age and eligibility loopholes. An extra year or two of high level training can be huge.
If he ever actually graduates, he needs to run a marathon STAT.
NYC I hope.

You tell me who has the bigger upside.
The crazy thing is that you'll be able to make this post again next year when he is EIGHT years removed from the performance.
....and then he'd still be eligible to compete again the following year, NINE years removed.
He was in the same high school class as Grant Fisher. Imagine letting Grant Fisher race today - would not be fair!
The guy didn't run for 2 years... if any of you trolls think the byu guys are actually benefitting from taking two years off from running...

WTF? I mean does this grampa just not care at all about ever making a living? Imagine giving up 5 extra years of no income just to go jogging. Some people just hate work so much that they will do anything to avoid it, and Mantz is the poster grampa.

I don't think he'll actually use the extra two years of XC eligibility that he still has. He's good enough to go pro.
And to the other poster, save me the age-old fib of them having to be completely sedentary during their two year mission trips. I know that to be untrue.
Grandpa Mantz wins circumventing the eligibility rules. Credit to him, I would do the same thing. He took advantage of a loophole.

2 years rest and recovery between soph & junior year of college is a huge advantage. Comes at a perfect time (after 7 years of serious running).Do you even realize how much mileage they put on their bicycles over those 2 years?
Name 1 BYU guy who has won NCAA BEFORE their mission = see, you can't.

Mantz SAYS he's only 24, but with all those confusing sister wives, nobody can keep the birth certificates legit.
Look, I’m as much a non supporter of mormonism as anyone; but please dont anonymously take stabs at someone’s religion on a message board. Not cool.

If it's such an advantage, every HS'er should join the Peace Corps and take advantage of the same loophole. I wonder why nobody does....

I was injured my last two years of college, and only got better after I graduated. I would have loved to run another two or three years!
A 24 year old is physically much more mature than an 18 year old.
This is a direct quote from Mantz:
"Returned missionaries are usually more mature physically, mentally, and emotionally."
It's false to assume that Mantz did no aerobic activity while at Ghana:
Another quote:
"I'll try to run if I can get my companion to come with me, but if not, I'll survive. You get 30 minutes every day to exercise, so hopefully I'll be able to run 30 minutes everyday. If not, I'll do core, jump rope, or something else"
He was given 30 minutes a day to train and there's no evidence to suggest he wasn't banging out 5 or 6 mile tempos in Ghana for all we know.

Not circumventing and not a loophole. The rules are very clear.
It is unusual that you have a competitor at NCAA Cross Country who could have possibly placed in the top 100 seven years prior.

I doubt most, if any, universities would hold a scholarship for an athlete to go into the Peace Corps for 2 years. I doubt BYU would for anything other than a Mormon mission.
