I know NAU is all about the final team score but I would have really liked to see Young allowed to go all out. Given their race earlier in the season its not out of the question he could have been the individual champ.

he ran a faster last 2k than everyone except mantz
Bruh did you just see the master class beat down Conner lambasted the entire field with??? Nobody was beating him today he was ready.
Plus he did it with his nuts hanging out ?

Yeah he closed like a big boy.
Nico isn’t faster than mantz rn... does he have the potential to be in a year or two? That’s where I think the answer changes.
Seems like every year this thread is made saying people were holding back. The answer is NO, he would not have won. "Holding back" AKA running smart was actually the optimal individual race strategy because its a long race. If he "went for the win" he would not race optimally and finish outside top 20. He would not have won this race.
No chance. Nico ran a very smart race. Would have looked like Alex Masai if he went out with those guys from the start.

this more or less settles it in my mind. Had he gone out harder and ran more of the race on his own, I don't see him out closing Mantz.
Maybe he could've takend own Kiptoo and Wildschut. Who knows.
Not Mantz, though.

this sounds like the most reasable possible take.
Does anybody know if wildschutt is still working with zola budd?
nico young is amazing but he could not have been beaten mantz today, he was just on another level than the rest of them
I think he can beat Mantz & the rest of the NCAA in 6 years. He'll be a young 24 and ready to go for the title.
I think that Mantz proved conclusively he was the strongest guy out there on this course. As for Nico Young, we should really bear in mind what Mike Smith said after the race, that we really need to back off all the hype and destroy cycles (I'm paraphrasing the sense of his comments) we get into with these young athletes. Smith wants a culture in which team comes first and the young athletes really have a hard time dealing with all this kind of talk. Young, he said, can handle a lot on his own but it's no good to practice this kind of messiah/archangel talk.

In 6 years, Mantz will be a senior and Nico will already be out of school for 3 years.

In distance running, the team does not come first. Smith's job is to help each athlete to run to their potential and the team score will take care of itself. Running the race as fast as possible, and helping the team, are the same thing.

Mantz didn't run for two years, and has managed to acquire aerobic fitness again at an elite level. Taking three to four months off alone from a stress fracture is bad enough in trying to regain aerobic strength back at an elite level.
So why do you think it's political?

Agreed, my college used to have team meetings where we would set goals for how small we wanted our team spread to be, such a waste of time. But hey! Hat tip to Notre Dame (15 second spread today) makes you wonder if all 5runners had optimal performances.
