From the IAAF website:
Sergiy Lebid, the three-times European champion, from Ukraine, dropped out at half distance, already buried in 23rd, and 35 seconds off the pace. He also failed to finish last year, following second in 2001. He had been unbeaten in six races on the country this winter.
I believe the scientific term is that he "shit the bed"
Lebid is amazing, I think its kinda unfortunate that he dropped out. He does not have amazing track PRs, but his XC performances rank with the best of them. I guess it shows how strong a runner he is.
Unbeaten in 6 races. I thought Bekele already beat him in one by over a minute earlier this year? Sounds like he was right on pace at half way. I agree that he "didn't quite make it to the bedpan".

How can his XC performances rank with the best of them if he can't get to the finish line?

You are correct, Kenenisa soundly trounced Sergey early this X-Country season. My assestment as to what happen to Sergey is only a guess, but guiding from the steering wheel in his back when he quit-maybe he was DROVE to submission by the Super fast early pace.
