Back around the turn of the century, Puma had a top distance spike, the Harambee, and sponsored some of the biggest names in distance running: Noah Ngeny, Wilson Kipketer, Daniel Komen, Moses Kiptanui, and Bernard Lagat. Then they went AWOL.

'Back in the day (70's/80's), PUMA was primarily a sprint shoe company that actually made excellent field event shoes as well. They missed the distance Running Boom largely generated by Nike and spent years trying to break in. They had a solid crew of top distance runners during the 80's but could never follow up with consistent training products. It also takes a lot of patience to break into that mature market. Let's see if PUMA has the patience now. It is a small start, but hopefully there is at least a 5 year plan.
...don’t forget Bill Rodgers ran in Puma in the early 1980s for a short time.
