Worst redliner = Kipchoge. Just not willing to push himself, I guess.
Pain face doesn't necessarily mean they're working harder. Perhaps that's just their style of expression when grinding. Others can give same effort and looked relaxed even though working hard. Josh MacDougal is a legendary grinder.
I thought the “Chunky American” who was 4th in the 1972 Olympics 5k was the greatest red liner in the history of running.

He seemed to be when he ran against other Americans. Many people have bought into the myth that he was tougher than other elite runners.
Well, Salazar was read the last rites after a race at Falmouth. That's pretty redlined!

No that's just what Geoff Hollister wants you to believe. Go buy some product.

There's a red line and a thin red line. I submit that Kipchoge oft rides the latter. I mean how else does one's face get distorted like this?
No. He just has resting pain face.

I think it is awesome how great he is doing, but I especially like watching the last 25% of his races. He is obviously one of the more talented individuals this generation, but I don't think he matches the talent of some of the other guys running in the NCAA right now (Teare for instance). Is Nico just one of the greatest redliners and grinders we've ever seen? I really do think of it like Fast and the Furious, where in the last bit of his races, he is in the RPM danger zone higher and for longer than anyone else racing and the pain in his face shows it. Is there anyone who has gotten more out of their level of talent than him? And I'm awanre he's not done yet
Conner Mantz might be even more of a better "redliner"

I doubt young makes an olympic team.. infact with his build I'll be surprised if he does anything by his senior year.. the dude def has an eating disorder/doesn't eat enough which tends to end horribly unless your Molly Seidel. Not trying to shame him but running at the level he is now and where he is progressing to doesn't end well for most runners unless they can figure out how to be a healthy weight.
The fact that you are assuming he has an eating disorder is just absurd. You are most likely the type of person that only talks about a women's frame or size during a race rather than the accomplishments they have had. Nico is already having a great year at NAU, but you can only say "the dude def has an eating disorder.... you have no business being a fan of this sport.

This is an awful take. Have you seen his Instagram? Apparently he's a foodie, because more than half of his early posts are of his cooking. Plus, he's gained a decent bit of muscle at NAU so he's definitely not starving himself.

Unfortunately this thread isn't about Neil Young.
Ritzenhein has to be in the conversation. The fact that he ran 12:56 when his max 800 ability was probably about 1:55 is absurd.
this is wrong, he did 1:54 in hs as im sure a part of a triple, and i think he did 1:54 at a CU outdoor meet and i think he did a 1500 as well, someone might be able to find that result. so the altitude conversion should give him some more there.
Ran 3:42.99 at the 2002 Cardinal Qualifier, nearly 3 seconds off the pace.
Ritzenhein can barely break 54 seconds for 400 meters, yet over longer distances he can maintain a grueling pace, even when he seems wasted. "Early in a race, you hear Dathan breathing like a stuck pig all the way across the track, but he can run at the point of exhaustion virtually for a full race," says Brad Prins, Ritzenhein's coach at Rockford High.

Actually, it IS fortunate that it is not about Neil Young. Is there any proof that this guy is or is not his grandson?

He thought he was, anyway. Didn't he say he races to see who can tolerate the most pain, or something like that?

If Ritzenheim had some type of super human pain tolerance, it would be expected that he would have significantly better at 10000m than 5000, but his 12:56 equates to sub-27 compared to his 27:20 PR. His 10K PR might be a little soft, but I doubt he could have ran much faster than 27:00.

Love it! This is definitely the type of quote I was looking for. I know Nico is super talented, but like Ritzenhein, I wonder if he is the next great to use every ounce of it
