100 mile week takes a different breed of human: a superhuman that is unlimited (Eliud Kipchogay).
Did your shins hurt a lot? What about your quads? Did you have to eat a LOT of food? Did you gain lots of muscle? Did you SWEAT a lot? Did you get blisters? Did you CHAFE? Share your stories please!
100 mpw is nothing special. Sure it was neat to have my weekly mileage hit triple digits, but other than that it didn't feel that different from a 90 mile week. A 100 mile week doesn't take a different breed of human. You could maybe make an argument that sustained weeks at high volume takes someone who is highly durable, but other than that there are a surprising number of average runners out there slinging high volume for no good reason.
To humor you and answer each of your questions specifically:
Did your shins hurt a lot?
No, and if I did I would assume I was overtraining.
What about your quads?
No, and if I did I would assume I was overtraining.
Did you have to eat a LOT of food?
Not much more than the "a lot" of food I was eating at 80-90 mpw.
Did you gain lots of muscle?
Running high volume usually causes you to lose muscle, but I noticed essentially no change.
Did you SWEAT a lot?
It was August when I hit it for the first time, so yeah.
Did you get blisters?
No.
Did you CHAFE?
No, vaseline in problem areas before a long, hot run goes a long way.
Don't worship 100 mile weeks for the idea that they're some sort of performance-improving magic. Just train smart and find what works best for you.
