The intuitive answer might be 600m as it's halfway between 400m and 800m, but it seems like most elite 400m guys are geared to last 400m and not much further. If we were to have the top 400m and 800m elites race each other over some distance where they would be roughly equal, what would that distance be? 550m?
At what distance would elite 400m runners and elite 800m runners be roughly equal to one another?

Yeah it would be close to 550 but maybe 10-30 meters less
-
Hmm, yes, an interesting question. It will be different for M and F.
I'm saying approximately 572m (on average). -
I'd also like to suggest that in an ultra they'd be roughly equivalent.
-
I think this mainly would depend on the background of the 800 guy. Someone like Donavon Brazier, or a similar type, would win around 500. Where it might take an 800-1500 guy more like 600 meters to win.

What about Radisher?

Yeah. Duh. In an ultra everyone is roughly equivalent. -
so last year i had a kid who was around a 50.8 400 runner and maybe around 2:09 in the 800.
Then I had a kid who was 52.5 in the 400 and 1:58.5 in the 800.
the 400 kid edged him out when they went head to head in the 600. Both were in the 1:25s. -

How so? In a 50K the range is not that small at all (especially without cut-offs). -

First reply, best answer you’re likely to get. -
That's a bit harsh, John. I'm sure lots of people will be along with decent estimates and their reasoning.

Fine, I’ll rephrase it if that upset you: “+1”
You called me John yesterday morning in that Bob Lazar/aliens thread. Please, call me “John Wesley Harding” or by my actual first name if you wish—Andy.

I say 500. The average elite 800 guy will run 45-47 in the 400. Very few elite 400 guys can break 1:50. Most will run 1:55.

The arithmetic mean is 600m
(400+800)/2
but the geometric mean is 565m
root(400*800)
Geometric Mean seems like the correct answer here. -
I'm sorry. I'll refer to you by your full honorific in the future: John Wesley Harding. I think it sounds very respectable! However, please don't hold me accountable for what I wrote in that other thread.
The aliens made me do it :(
I will also have a look at that album! I didn't know. -
I actually think 565m is very close (for men).

I have a question for you coach. In high school I ran 50mid for the 400 and 1:56.3 for the 800. I played basketball June thru late January then came out and ran track late January thru May. The only mileage I did was during track season, never in the summer or during basketball. My highest mileage week was probably 8 miles. During that week I think I ran two 300 meter workouts then one day of 5 miles and one day of 3 miles. If I remember correctly, I think I did all my miles on my high school track. SMH, I ran my pr of 1:56.3 that week and it felt pretty comfortable. However, how did I run under 2:00 with pretty much literally no distance base and not what you would call great 400meter speed?

If the year were 1971 instead of 2021, you would not have to ask. The answer is 600 yards (548.64 metres). I held my school record in 600 yards for less than 2 hours. I was a middle distance runner. A 400m/400m specialist broke my school record before the ink dried. Up until 1970's, 600 yard was raced, 400m guys versus 800m guys, closely fought battles.
Seven big names, 600 yards, 1) Lon Myers, 74.5, a 440 yard man (1st sub-50 440 yard man), 2)Thomas Burke, 71.0, a sprinter, 3) Mel Sheppard, 70.8, a 400m to 1500m man, 4) Douglas Lowe, 70.4, an 800m man, 5) Martin McGrady, 67.6i, a 400m man, 6) Mark Everett, 67.53i, an 800m man, 7) Butch Reynolds, 66.87, a 400m man. -
I think it would be close to 600-625. 400m runners do tend to run out of gas right after 400m, but only when they're going all out. If they were holding back some, they could go further.
