Trying to make another run at improving my marathon this year. In 2019 I ran 3:24 with a so-so diet (too much McDonalds) and no prior experience other than 3 halves (averaging 1:42 from 2017 to 2019). I used posts here to create my own training cycle. (Went from 30 mpw in May 2019 to 50 mpw by July/August. Did 3 20s and 1 21 as my long runs and peaked at 61 mpw, I also did 2 5ks in 21:53 and 21:50, and the Cap City Half in 1:42 6 mos. prior to the Fall Marathon).
But I'm trying to go a different direction. I have the Pfitzinger Advanced Marathoning book and will do the 55-mpw or 70-mpw week plan once I'm 18 weeks out from Cbus (3rd Sunday in October).
For now, how would you structure base-building? I started last Wed. with 21 miles (8 miles on Saturday).
Am shooting for 30-35 this week, maybe more, but a lot of it is long and slow for just time on my feet. Not really caring about the actual times, running by feel mainly.
Do you throw in any hills or speed, or is a pre-training block usually just EZ base mileage? I know I need to improve my overall speed, but if I can run 3:24 on little direction and making it up for the most part, I want to see what I can do with more structure.
I'm also hopeful we even HAVE a Marathon this fall; otherwise, will it be a waste of time?
